Bush leaving for OC at Kentucky

PreviousPage 2 of 3Next

So NOW is the time to imitate Chicken Little (if you are inclined to do that sort of thing) - but one week ago was NOT the time to do so.   I don't do a good impersonation of Chicken Little so I will pass on that.

Personally - as I wrote earlier - this is not a problem for Boise State.   Everyone is replaceable - that is always the case.  As the old saying goes graveyards are filled with indispensable people.   Boise State will hire a new O.C. and life will go on.

The great news here is - according to Malachi Nelson's father - is Malachi is not considering joining Hamdan at Kentucky.   So I say be thankful for what you have and do not focus or obsess on what you do not have.   The only thing to focus on now is who will be the new Boise State offensive co-ordinator?

Lots of chatter about how intriguing the Boise State OC job is due to a very experienced offense, and Jeans and Malachi. ESPN is very complimentary on the premier OC job in G5. Kirby Moore is high on the wish list, he is OC at Missouri. Dickey better do some serious fundraising,  we will lots of fast rising and experienced OC's interested. Hope we can afford to pay.

Go Broncos!

My GUESS is the new O.C. will be announced before the end of February, i.e., no later than two weeks from today.

Personally - if I had ANY say on this (which I obviously do not) - I'd say hire Dinwiddie.

Wouldn't really put this as a "wish list" of OCs. Just a mix of names that I feel are intriguing and a mix of names I've seen others throw out that could make a ton of sense.

Candidates that I personally like:

  • Junior Adams (Oregon CO-OC) - Lot of familiarity with BSU. Almost positive he is not the playcaller for Oregon. This would give him the possibility of calling his own plays here. Would likely be a longshot of us being able to get him though.
  • Mack Leftwich (Texas State OC) - I brought up his name on the BC forums. Really young coach who helped lead (wouldnt be surprised if GJ Kinne was the actual playcaller) one of the top offenses in college football last year.
  • Jordan Davis (North Texas OC) - Another very young OC. Same thing as Leftwich. Led one of the better offenses in college football.
  • Taylor Housewright (Akron OC) - Formally Montana State's OCs since 2021 before being hired by Akron this offseason. Led one of the most potent offenses in the FCS as his time as the MSU OC. Very surprised no Power 5 team gave him a shot to be their OC.

Spring practices start around Mar 5th.  The players will have to start learning a new system and OC, if the new OC makes many changes, during Spring and Fall camps.  The new OC will have lots of trust building to go with planning an offense, teaching Malachi to better him for next fall, recruiting, etc.  Yeah, they will have to find somebody before the end of Feb and hope he is as  good as advertised.  Dinwiddie is also mentioned as an option, it would be a nice pay bump for him, Kirby, Pease, Harsin, Stanford are all on the fan list, plus other OC's in FBS.

The big positive is what ESPN refers to when they say we have a very intriguing job, the premier OC job in G5.  SD should have lots of applicants with little time to decide.  Talk about another critical decision by our newbie coach.. Now, Dickey will need a way to find the money.  As the movie line says, "Show Me the Money!"

Go Broncos!

Great names BSUaddict.  I saw them too, great out of the family tree names SD needs to look at if Kirby is not available.

Candidates that Ive seen others say:

  • Joe Bleymaier (Chiefs pass game coordinator) - Son of our former AD. Been a part of the Chiefs for the past few years. No clue if he has interest in coaching in college but wouldn't hurt to reach out.
  • Scott Frost (Former Nebraska and UCF HC) - At one point could have very well been our HC if we didnt land Harsin going into the 2014 season. Stayed away from the game this past year. Could be a start of a bounce back for him if he was interested.
  • Russ Callaway (Florida TE coach) - This was a name randomly thrown out on the BC forums as a rumored possibility. Was a OC at Samford in the FCS for a couple of seasons and led a top tier passing attack.
  • Ryan Dinwiddie (CFL HC) - I really don't know how much interest Dinwiddie would have coming back into the college game as a Group of 5 OC. But with it being his alma mater I could maybe see a world where it happens.
  • Mike Sanford Jr (Too many spots to list lol) - I don't know what BJ's buyout number is on Sanford's BNN contract but I think this could be a win/win for both BNN and Boise State fans! Horrible jokes aside, Ive seen a ton of people claim they "dont want" him back as OC or "hes not good anymore" takes. Maybe I am drinking too much of the kool-aid listening to him talk ball and knowing the caliber of play-caller he was (and most likely still is). Just seems like if we were going to have a "retread hire" this would be my guy.

Well, if Dickey is any good at being an A.D. (and we know that he is) he has a list of replacement candidates in a drawer in his desk for EVERY coach at Boise State.  So I'm sure they are already in the interview(s) stage and they already have a favorite in mind.

Not sure how Kirby Moore would be available.  He just signed a 2-year $2.5M deal at Missouri.

Current contracts:

Junior Adams (~$650k)

Mack Leftwich ($280k)

Jordan Davis (~$230k)

Housewright ($110k at MSU, can't find what Akron bumped that too) DUI makes him not a prime candidate IMO.

Bleymeier (can't find but likely above $5-600k)

I'd go with Scott Frost (currently unemployed) or Junior Adams (recruited a certain top WR to commit to Oregon).

I don't think Dickey has any responsibility for assistants.  That's up to who SD wants.
