The next Boise State OC/QB coach

Does anybody know what Dinwiddie is making in the CFL?   I have no idea for CFL coach and could not find much online.

Just was curious if we could pay him a number worth leaving his CFL head coaching job.

Like you, I couldn't find much about his salary but have read from other people and a general google search that states "Head coaches in the CFL generally earn in the $275,000 to $400,000 range while those with a dual general manager-head coach title can expect a salary in excess of $500,000."  I think we could make it happen if we wanted to go that route. Although he's never lobbied himself to be the OC, he has said he would possibly entertain the idea if approached. Like others have said as well though: The main question is if he has graduated or not. I'm sure we could find a way to work around that if it was to be a hold up but who knows.

I don't think Dickey is going to allow us to bargain shop for an OC this go around (no offense to Plough). I am in the boat of its either going to be who we think it most likely will be (Miller) or I truly think it could be a surprise hire (in a good way). I think he is starting to get the donor support and trust from people in the valley and if we can cap the season off with another MW championship, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bigger donors contribute more to the salary pool.

I can't help but think Kirby Moore and Matt Miller are early favorites. Kirby obviously would be immensely popular with the fans and has done an above average job at FSU (When Haener has been healthy) Matt Miller would be a great Internal Hire as he already has great relations with the players and it would be a fairly seamless transition.

The Dark Horse I personally like is Gunderson from UCLA. His development and helping the growth of Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been amazing. I think he could do a stellar job with TG and could elevate his game even more. I also like that he comes from the Chip Kelly tree. Kelly's offensive tendencies would fit really well with what we have now and I think we could explode on offense with it.

The name that instantly popped into my head for some reason was Mark Helfrich. Obviously not the pay that the Bears or Oregon gave him. But I feel like he'd rather be coaching than working for Fox as an analyst. I think it would be a interesting hire and the risk vs reward could be massive. Plus he worked for Koetter when Koetter was HC. There is a lot of connections there in itself. Obviously I don't think this scenario happens but it would be intriguing for sure!

What do you think?

I think Helfrich is one of those completely unrealistic suggestions.   Boise State's O.C./QB coach this year was salaried at $270 k.   Secondly he was fired as the head coach at Oregon because his results as head coach were way below expectations.    He's only making about $73 k these days as an occasional commentator for Fox Sports but he was making 3.3 MILLION dollars in 2016 at Oregon.  I seriously doubt he has any interest in working as the O.C./QB coach at Boise State for $300,000.

Lastly as coach Koetter has made clear this year as the acting O.C./QB coach for Boise State "This is a young man's game".   Matt Miller and Kirby Moore fit that description.  Mark Helfrich does not.

Helfrich is definitely an intruiging name and would think that he would enjoy coaching more than working as a analyst. Gunderson was also a name i thought would be intriguing.  I am in the same thought process as you that the Chip Kelly Spread offense is probably what suits our team best from an X's and O's standpoint. He makes just a shade over $400k/year so would be spendy but i feel like its doable. May have to get creative and make it more incentive/performance based but I think we could make it work.

There is another name that popped into my head that I am surprised I havent seen get much mention but our former WR coach Junior Adams who is currently at Oregon in the same role and Co-OC. I dont know if he is calling plays or not but one thing we all know about him is his ability to develop players and is a awesome recruiter. It could be low key a home run hire that is overlooked. With that being said, the downfall could ultimately be his asking price. He is currently making $575k as the CO-OC/WR coach and id assume if anything it would take nothing short of $500k to at least peak his interest in being able to run his own offense here. Long shot? Maybe so. I do feel like Dickey wants to be able to go out and pay for a OC but probay too soon to think we are going to be able to offer a guy close to the amount of money that it could take to lure in someone like Adams.

Adams is making $575,000 PLUS bonuses at Oregon.  I seriously doubt that he would even consider returning to Boise State to make roughly half of what he's making now.

I still think you are slightly underestimating what we will be able to pay. We cant match straight up what Oregon offers of course but we have been creative in the past with contracts and we most likely will have to do so again IF the idea is we are trying to lure a coach who is making $450k+ at their current spot. We lucked out of having to pay Bhonapha a huge salary year 1 due to Washington still having him on the books for 2022. He is slated to make around $320k this upcoming season and nearly $350k in 2024 if he sticks around. I don't even know if that's factoring in the perk in Avalos' deal where the salary pool gets bumped up by $50k each new year. Is that a crazy amount? No but it gives us a tiny bit of wiggle room for potential bigger contracts.

I also said it in the end of my post that I think Adams would be most likely out of our range. It seems like he is going to be destined for calling his own plays at a P5 school soon or even running his own program with the trajectory he has been on lately. If we hire outside of our staff for an OC I definitely believe people could be shocked at how much we pay a guy.

Adams is now not even close to being an option since he now will be most likely the full time OC now that Dillingham is now the HC at ASU.

Mark Helfrich is 49 yrs old, that isnt that old for a coach
