The next Boise State OC/QB coach

Page 1 of 2Next

Alright guys and gals - Hopefully this new post is posted for discussion.

Who do you want to be the next OC/QB coach?

I have seen lots of discussion on the BTB concerning Koetter's replacement.  Sources say AA will decide in December before the early signing day.  Lets get this out in front before the Kellen Moore votes come in.  We are a G5 school with an upper G5 budget, which means we are not competing with the P5 and their million dollar OC salaries.  Kellen Moore would have to take a huge paycut to come here and right now he is happy earning big bucks as Dallas Cowboys OC. So, lets hear the drum roll...............

My choice is Ryan Dinwiddie - currently head coach of the Toronoto Argonauts.  He is a former BSU QB and was a QB in the Canadian Football League before becoming a head coach for Toronto.  He has done well as a HC; he has taken Toronto to the Grey Cup playoffs two straight years.  Some chatter on BTB says that he has talked to AA and on a Boise radio show opening expressed interest in our OC job.  I have heard that he makes under $4oo,000 Canadian Dollars per year, so he is well within our budget.

Thoughts and comments?  Let it flow....

Go Broncos!

He may make under $400,00 Canadian but as many Americans who have earned a living in Canada have found he has to pay taxes on that income in both the U.S. and Canada (as an American citizen).

As to Koetter's replacement I've already voiced my opinion on that.  I say hire Kellen's brother Kirby away from Fresno State.

Who i want is someone that can help take Greens development to the next level and put guys into the right spots. I've been a strong advocate since seeing Green at QB running more of a spread option offense. Think of something like Coastal Carolina and how their offense operates and how Chip Kelly ran his offenses at Oregon and now UCLA. I still believe the next OC is going to be Matt Miller we'll hire a separate QB coach. The offense we are running now is very reminiscent of Montana State's offense Miller had when he was their play caller. Heavy run out of multiple sets with multiple guys being able to run the rock and opportunistic pass game. Im all for it tbh. I think Matt would be ready for the call up and keep up the development.

Potential guys with Boise ties that I could see us interviewing:

  • Matt Miller (Current WR coach)
  • Lee Marks (Washington AHC/RB coach)
  • Ryan Dinwiddie (CFL HC)
  • Bush Hamdan (Missouri QB coach)
  • Kirby Moore (Fresno OC)

Potential guys with non Boise ties:

  • Taylor Housewright (Montana State OC)
  • Doug Meacham (TCU Inside WR coach and Former OC)
  • Ryan Gunderson (UCLA QB coach)
  • Mike Bloesch (North Texas Co-OC/QB coach)

Matt Miller would to me feel kind of like settling, even if it isn't truly so.  Just would feel like hey we needed to save money, Miller already on staff.

I maybe in the minority but I just don't see us hiring Kirby Moore.   Would his results warrant consideration if his last name was not Moore?

Housewright was on Oregon staff at the same time as Andy.  Kind of wonder if he could be darkhorse candidate.  Montana St been playing great - smoked Montana bad today.

I don't know, but would wonder if Hamdan making more at SEC QB coach than we could pay as OC.  SEC pays big money.   Drinkowitz just got extended hamdan may feel hehas good job

I want someone with playcalling experience.  Don't believe that Lee Marks has called plays before and is not doing so currently.

Guess I don't have a favorite on who we pick at this point.  It is big hire. We have seen coaching matters. The different in ability between Plough and Koetter is massive.

I hope Dirk comes back as an advisor, this would ensure continuity.  One name I haven’t seen mentioned (maybe for good reason), but I’ll throw it out there is Mike Sanford.  He is the interim HC at Colorado.  The university may be looking in a different direction for it’s next HC leaving Mike available.  He has a ton of experience…

I would love it if Dirk came back possibly in a limited role again but at the same time I dont want the next OC to feel like they have to look over their shoulder non stop cause of what we have gone through this season.

You are not the only one who would like to see Sanford possibly come back. Many people have shared the same sentiments. I left him off my list personally cause 1. Not really impressed with his offenses at his prior stops. 2. I'm not a fan of bringing coordinators back in the same role they had previously with us just because they had success once. Nothing against the people who would want him back though. I definitely understand why.

Hamdan is making $500k as the QB coach at Missouri.  No way he takes a $200k pay cut....

As for Dinwiddie, there is some question about whether he actually graduated or not.  If he did not, then he won't be a candidate, because it is a requirement to have a 4-yr degree to coach at Boise State.  If he does have his degree, he is my top choice, and he has made it known publicly that he wants the job.

By the way it was reported today that Hamden has had the play calling duties the last few games for Missouri. He isnt coming to BSU

I am intrigued by Ryan Gunderson UCLA QB coach. He did a great job as a QB coach at UCLA too.

I think the UCLA offense would fit with BSU offense personel very well.

Does anybody know what Dinwiddie is making in the CFL?   I have no idea for CFL coach and could not find much online.

Just was curious if we could pay him a number worth leaving his CFL head coaching job.
