Potato Bowl becoming realistic option for Boise State

Page 1 of 2Next

Staying in Boise to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is becoming a more realistic possibility for the Boise State football team, multiple sources told Bronco Nation News on Thursday.

Boise State (7-5) has expressed interest in potentially wanting to play in the game, according to sources, due to the potential dates of other options.

According to sources there is a growing sentiment among players to finish the season prior to Christmas instead of potentially missing an extra week with family to play in a bowl such as the Arizona Bowl on Dec. 31. If that means playing in the Potato Bowl, they would like be for it.

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN. The Broncos haven’t played in the game since 2005.

One source told Bronco Nation News that a lot of juggling among teams and bowls would have to occur to make it happen, but that it’s a realistic possibility - which hasn’t been the case for the Broncos in well over a decade.

Boise State has long preferred to play elsewhere to give players a final trip and experience to finish the season. The Potato Bowl also ranks lower on the Mountain West pecking order, and the Broncos typically have much more attractive options and opponents.

But after losing five games in the regular season for the first time since 1998, it might be the best option to get the season done before the holidays while also giving the seniors one final chance to play on The Blue.

Boise State athletic director Jeramiah Dickey indicated the Potato Bowl might be an option for the Broncos during a live social media interview with Bronco Nation News on Wednesday.

“I think every option is on the table,” Dickey said. “Playing in your home stadium and at home, my priority going into this has been I want the best possible student-athlete experience. They’ve earned it. It’s hard to win and get to a bowl and I know what our expectations are but this is something that should be celebrated for these kids and the hard work they put into it.

“I want the best possible experience and if that ends up being here, wherever it ends up being, we’re going to embrace it and make sure it’s the best possible experience for the staff, their families and the student-athletes.”

A source told Bronco Nation New that even if Boise State indicated it would play in the Potato Bowl other things would have to be juggled and moved around to make it happen. That could mean finding a more attractive opponent to play, or having to juggle the other games and dominoes that would come from Boise State no longer being an option elsewhere.

Bowl bids will officially be announced on Sunday. Stay tuned to BroncoNationNews.com for the latest.

  1. My only dislike of this personally would be the the 1:30pm start time. If it were a 5 or 6pm game i think that would have been perfect for a Tuesday game and possibly get more people in the seats

My only holdup is our home record this season... After not playing a bowl game last year and having bad experiences the two years prior, this might not be a terrible option this year.

That's the great thing about playing another game at home...the opportunity to right the wrongs of the regular season. You know?...Go out with a home win for the last game of the year and get rid of the sour taste in our mouths. I'm a big fan of this option! Not like we can expect a ton of really great alternatives anyway. Hopefully we can lay the wood on a MAC team and call it a season. With the school taking such a hit financially due to covid, this would definitely save on expenses.

I am concerned that Bronco Nation would not show up in force.  This would not be a good look on TV for the program.  After a disappointing season by Bronco Nation standards, being a Tuesday afternoon game and a potentially lackluster opponent may leave the stadium 1/2 empty.  BSU does not own the game, ESPN does.  Season ticket holders will be reluctant to attend since they may not get their usual seats or parking spaces.  Being the game is the middle of the workweek may keep other fans away too.  Having few fans for an away bowl game is explainable, but at home is something different.  I’d be there, but is this the way the Broncos want to end their season, at home and few fans?

Separate thought:  Maybe they would wear stormtrooper white, now that would be weird!

I think it is a win-win for the team.  A chance to get a dominating win on the blue and award the fans with another home game.  I live in SLC and been to the Vegas bowl twice;  Boise is a bit closer and cheaper.  Lets see where the dominos fall.

This is the same worry I have. I like the idea of the team getting a chance to play in front of the fans again, I just hope the fans show their support!

I’m just not a fan of playing a bowl game in your home stadium.     Go play someone on a neutral field where one team doesn’t have any advantage.

Where is the Potato Bowl in the MW pecking order for bowl games? Saw that Mandel was saying the Arizona bowl was targeting BSU cause they have the second pick when it comes to MW teams. Both the Potato and Arizona bowl matchups are MW v MAC (doesn’t do much for me)…

I don’t hate the idea, I think it makes sense given the season. Maybe ESPN can trade for a better opponent.
