With 3 Boise State softball infield players departing

Those three being catcher Serena Huchingson, third base Autumn Bennett and shortstop Eliyah Flores the question is who will be their likely replacements?  Catcher for next season would seem to be Brooklyn Pettis or possibly Abby Bumcrot IF she goes back to playing catcher.

But who replaces Autumn Bennett at third base?  Sydney Groves played nearly every 2022 fall game I saw at third base.    Ashlyn Whalen might be another possibility.  Or maybe Zoe Karam or Abby Edwards or Hollie Farmer?

And who replaces Aliyah Flores as the shortstop for 2024?  Hollie Farmer played a lot in the fall games I saw in 2022 at Shortstop.  But Megan Lake is also a possibility (her primary position in HS was SS).

And what about Kelsey Hall?  Is she going to be utilized next season at a specific defensive position?  Or will she continue to be the DP?   Maybe Hall takes 2nd base next season and Farmer and Bumcrot take shortstop and third (or vice versa).

This is a good question and Bennet and Flores will be hard to replace.  But, the most pressing question is can Justin find a quality pitcher in the portal or a JC transfer.  Softball success really depends on pitching.  Taylor Caudill is really good, but she cannot pitch every game.  I think Aguinaga will be a good pitcher, but it might take another year.  I also think she can be used more as a lefty reliever to get some critical outs.  Kasey got beat up early in the year when we were playing top teams.  Justin needs to give her a bit more time to regain confidence and she will be a good weapon for us.

It was really a lot of fun watching the team this year.  I think the players and the coaches learned a lot this year.  Hopefully Justin keeps the team together for an even stronger run next year.

Flores and Bennett will be hard to replace for sure.  But IMO the toughest loss is Serena Huchingson.  She was an outstanding Catcher.  Probably the best I've seen play for Boise State.  And I've been watching and attending Boise State softball games since the first year (2009).

Given Shults' connections to schools like Oklahoma and Oregon, Fresno State, etc., I'm sure they will find a good pitcher from the TP.

Speaking of that first year for Boise State softball back in 2009 I came across a box score for one of the games for the Boise State softball team that year in a game vs. Hawaii.  See if the names of the Boise State softball players from 2009 ring any bells:

Hill, Laeha lf
Straton, Lexi c
Cox, Kathy 3b
Crump, Allie rf
Capobianco, Christin 1b
Viers-Gordillo, Ashl dp
Sweeney, Kelly. 2b
Calplan, Kellie ss
Perkins, Kelsey cf
Zell, Aubray p

You can find the 2009 Boise State softball schedule online but someone foolishly removed all of the box scores.   The only way I found this one was by looking on Hawaii's softball schedule from 2009.

I would have to agree with Serena being the best catcher since BSU started softball.  However, Abby is an experienced catcher with probably 15 or 20 starts last year (probably due to the other starting pitcher).  But, we haven't seen many other starts this year at 3rd or SS.  My guess is that we have players waiting for their opportunities, but just who that is will be a big question.

I remember Allie Crump, but I really started watching BSU Softball the spring of 2013.  I was in Washington DC and was able to watch most of the games.  Rebecca Patton (I think) was the pitcher and she was really good in helping that young team.

The two best, or most productive, players on that first year Boise State softball team in 2009 were Kathy Cox and Allie Crump.  Cox was the first Boise State softball player to be named 1st Team All Conference (in the W.A.C.).  She was an outstanding player both offensively and defensive at 3rd base.  Cox also received regional honors as well.

Lexi Straton was a true freshman in 2009 and she was Boise State's first starting catcher.
