Who becomes the 2024 Boise State D-Coordinator?

Does Danielson promote Kane Ioane - who was the Co-DC this season for Boise State as well as the DC at Montana State in 2019 when MSU advanced to the FCS Semi-finals that season.   And in 2015 he was their DC in his first stint at MSU.

OR

Erik Chinander - who is the Assistant HEAD coach this season at Boise State and was the DC at both Nebraska (2021) and UCF (2017)

OR

Do they bring in someone new to the coaching staff.

Personally I would say promote from within and then bring in a new person at one of the lower  levels.

I would bet that Ioane gets promoted to full time play caller for the defense. Easy transition and I think we could probably look at hiring another full time defensive assistant in the process.

One thing to monitor though with Ioane. If he for some reason doesn't get promoted to full time DC. He was on Jeff Choate's staff at Montana State as his defensive coordinator in 2019. Potter and Miller same thing but I expect those 2 to probably still be on the staff for next season. If Coach D decided to make some changes and those 3 were involved, wouldn't be surprised if Choate gave them a call to come down to Reno to be on his staff.

As far as maybe outside hires for potential DC? I'd have to do some digging around but one long shot candidate off the top of my head would be Gerald Alexander. I don't think he has any real interest in returning to the college game judging by his tweets but who knows. He also has ties with Choate being on his staff at Montana State as well. I'd personally look at Power 5 positional coaches for the DC spot or look at the top G5 defenses from around the country and see if we could find a gem that we could raise their pay and come in.

I'd be more inclined to opt for Chinander myself.  Primarily because he has been a DC at the top level of college football not once but twice - at Nebraska and UCF.

Secondly Ioane has been responsible for the Safeties this year and frankly the play in that area has been less than satisfactory this season.

Chinander was almost ridden out of Nebraska as they're DC.  The Dline was not good in the first eight games, which is his responsibility.  Also, I wonder how committed he was to this team this year until later.  He acted like he was going thru the motions.

On the other hand, Ioane's secondary struggled through eight games this year.  11 ints this year is barely average for a good team.

Maybe Spencer has his eyes on a rising star.  There are a few out there.
