What's Up With Max Rice????

I'm curious if you can find out about this  B.J,  but Max, as a Redshirt junior, is playing a bit like a scared freshman.  He's having his worst shooting performance of his career so far in this early stretch, shooting an abysmal 1/14 overall (0/8 from 3) with his only Field goal being a 2 against Temple and shooting 3/5 from the line.  I do recall in the recent Tulsa game that there were times he was wide open that he decided to pass up on and pass the ball, especially a couple of times when Horne was about 3 feet away from him and wide open for a 3 pt shot.  He has been playing much more timidly this season compared to others past.  This so far is shaping up to be his worst as a Bronco, since 19-20 he averaged 10.9 min/gm, shot 37.1% from the field (36.6% from 3) along with a 6o % FT clip, and last season averaged 17.5 min/gm, shot 45.7 % from the field (36.1% from 3), and hit FTs at 85.7% clip.  Comparing his stats with Kuzmanovic (13.4 min/gm, 42.9% from the field, 40% from 3, and yet to miss a Free Throw), wouldn't it make more sense for Leon to play Kuzmanovic over Max until Max can show he has earned that playing time again (especially since this team can be said is underperforming offensively and Kuzmanovic is currently the better offensive weapon and shooter currently than Rice)?

Leon has been cagey about it, but Max is dealing with an injury. I think, and B.J. can correct if this is inaccurate, it's hip-related? He's clearly working his way back into shape each game. Anything else to add B.J.?

Max is generally a liability on defense.  This year the team is going to be very defensive oriented.  But with DD gone, Max will have to fill some minutes.  So hopefully he will get his shot working again.

Max had two surgeries in the offseason, one on his hip and one for a broken bone in his foot. He clearly doesn't look to be 100 percent. Something just isn't right. If he's in the game, he needs to be shooting. Nothing against Max, but nobody would pick him as the No. 1 defender on the team. He's in the game for a reason - to shoot. And in the last few games he's had multiple open looks that he's passed up and then with fans yelling for him to shoot he's forced up a couple tough shots.

I have asked and Leon said last week to "trust your eyes" about how he looks (alluding to an injury) but didn't get specifc.

I am en route to Northridge for the CSUN game tonight and will try to ask again depending on how he does. But I agree he's not himself and something isn't right. I mean we're eight games into the season and he still hasn't made a 3-pointer. That's crazy.

Just judging by the box score it seemed like he was bit more active tonight and got some shots up

Max Rice would be a great 6th man at College of Idaho
