Updated Boise State softball team roster for 2023

The Boise State Softball team roster has recently been updated and lists the names, uniform numbers, height, positions, etc., of all 26 members of the 2023 team.

I had thought earlier that perhaps, as a result of three (or four?) year starter @ 1st base Alison Seng graduating that Boise State MIGHT be utilizing Serena Huchingson at 1st base for 2023 because she did play 1B in H.S.   But she is still listed solely as a Catcher for 2023 on this updated roster.

Maybe it's just me but I found it a bit odd that incoming transfer Kylie Baumert (transfer from C.S.I. who played solely in CF last season) is listed as 1B/OF.   I say odd because I can't see a player who is only 5' 6" tall playing 1st base.  Conventional wisdom dictates that you want your tallest available player at 1st base - to get that extra length to grab errant throws to 1B.

I'm curious to see who they have playing at 1st base in the upcoming fall exhibition games.

The following is how I see the best available options for the 2023 1st base player for the BSU softball team.  Just my opinion tho.  That and a $1.50 might get you a cup of coffee, i.e., take it for what it's worth.

# 32 - Zoe Karam – 1B/3B – 2023 True FR - 6' 0”

# 00 - Sydney Groves – SS/1B/3B – 2023 True FR - 5' 11

#21 - Serena Huchingson - C-1B-DP - 2023 RS SR - 5' 9"

# 25 - Lindsey Walljasper – RHP – 2023 SR – 5' 11” (IF she can play 1B when she's not pitching)

It's also going to be interesting to see who will be replacing Eliyah Flores at Shortstop and Kelsey Lalor in Center Field for the 2023 season.  As well as Bella Rocco at Third Base.  Lots of 2022 starters will have to be replaced for 2023.  About the only infield positions that won't need a replacement is 2nd base and catcher.

Bella had lost her spot to Autumn Bennett.

Zoe Karam might be like Seng and play as a freshman.  Same with Groves.

I could easily be wrong but I think there's more to it than that.   I think Bella lost the starting spot towards the end of last season mainly because she wasn't producing offensively.  That and the fact that her fielding was not very good.  In other words I think she played herself right out of the lineup.

Bennett played last season at 2nd, SS and 3rd.  She should be the starter in 2023 at either SS or 3rd - the only question is which one?

Personally I hope Bella does well at Fresno State next season.  She has a chance to win the starting 3rd base spot there as their 2022 starter at 3B, Kasey Hvitved, was a 5th year Senior in 2022.  And the only other player on the FSU team who played at 3rd base for Fresno State in 2022 was Mackenna  Steele.  And Steele played at 3B in only 8 games in 2022 (not necessarily started there). Plus Steele batted only .239 in 2022.

The Boise State coaches MIGHT move Jalen Ervin from 2nd to Shortstop - then have Bennett at 3rd - and then look for someone to replace Ervin at 2nd. Such as Bobbiann Pratt. Only time will tell.

I will get a preview when I go to two or three fall games.  These are a bit like NFL preseason games.  Sometimes starters play and sometimes the freshmen play.  The first home game is the 25th of Sept.

I will only be going to one of the Boise State softball fall games.  That being the game here in Nampa in October.  With gas prices being 250 percent of what they were prior to Biden in the White House a trip for me (on a fixed income) to Boise and back is an expensive proposition.
