Shooting Woes

Page 1 of 2Next

I can't figure out why Boise State struggles with their shooting percentage. I thought that adding Duryea would be beneficial as he always had good shooters at Utah State. Are the coaching modifying shooting form? Is the team not getting enough shooting reps at practice? Any ideas?

I can assure they practice shooting plenty in practice. I think it could just be they don't have a lot of great shooters and more guys that are better at slashing and getting to the rim. Or it could just be a rough patch and the numbers will soon correct.

But the numbers aren't good, no denying that. Already three games under 33 percent shooting overall.

And nationally the Broncos rank 331st of 358 teams in 3-point shooting at just 27.7 percent. That has to improve for this team to make any noise this year.

If struggles continue tonight I'll try to ask Leon about this. Thanks for the question/comment.

The offense sometimes gets stagnant.

Just because you are open for a 3 doesn't mean you should take it.

It would be fun to see them slash to the rim and create. Get to the paint and shoot or bring a defender and create a mismatch. With Abu and Akot we get frequent mismatches. With DD and Shaver we can get to the paint and shoot high percentage shots.

Would love to see Abu driving to the paint more than taking those open threes. At 17% from beyond the arc, its just hard to justify taking that shot especially when you have the jump shot package he has!

The players definitely have the ability to make plays and get to the rim.  The game against Utah Valley definitely showcased this.  The Broncos went 4 of 20 from 3, and it was not nearly as noticeable due to the inside game that was on display.  FG% was over 50% that game, despite shooting 20% from 3.  Its just a matter of adapting the offense to the strengths of the players.  Would love to see a season where the cumulative FG% is over 50% .   The inside game is the ticket there.

Its odd. It used to be that BSU had shooters but no athleticism. Now its the opposite

Their shot selection hasn't been great this year. More ball movement and getting to the rim will improve their shooting.

I personally would also like to see more Kuzmanovic and Degenhart and less Max Rice.

Is their lack of success shooting due to mental toughness?  They played well against better competition, but seemed to fall into the trap of playing to the level of their competition.  As a team, they have been mostly terrible from 3, they are also woeful from the free throw line.  Being successful from the charity stripe shows mental toughness.

I think we can do better than 20% in the rest of he games.  Poor FT shooting shows a lack of concentration.  Broncos really looked passed Bakersfield.  This seniorladen team should never do that.  GO BRONCOS!!!

Good shooters are natural and confident with their shots; such players are not easily made through repetitive shooting practices.  They are team leaders, the go to guy, the one person who the team can rely on to hit the critical shots and carry the team.  They can have a selfish streak that needs to be managed when they have a "brick" period - shots not falling. Unfortunately, Coach Rice cannot consistently recruit these guys and he can be too nice of a guy, not willing to put his foot down during the game when shooting goes south, like against UC Bakersfield.   I watched game on TV, cringing at the selfish play and me first shooting.  That is where Rice needed to act, not after the game.  All I can say is, good luck tonight and hope they turn it around.
