SDSU files to leave MWC.

Looks like the SUDS are planning their exit prematurely. Trying to save $17 million on exit fees. The Blue Turf Board is blowing up on this.

The official letter from SDSU to the MWC commish and presidents is below.  SDSU is trying to claim that they never intended to resign from the conference.  This sure does look like an official resignation request.  There is some chatter in the MWC conference newsletter on who the conference should invite:  North Dakota State Bison's is the name they suggested.  Also, UTEP or both Montana Schools.  Thoughts guys and gals?

I cant help but laugh at how the Aztec admin handled that letter. I guess maybe their academics is not as great as they would like to think 😉. They'll be invited to the Pac 12 regardless though. It just may have to come at a steep cost if it isn't done by Friday!

I think Thompson massively screwed up last summer when he had the chance to snag UTSA and UNT. But that was par the course under his tenure the last decade. Had chances to get Wichita State at the height of their basketball team making deep tourney runs and flat out told them no cause they didn't have football.

So for teams I'd like to see the MW try and lure our way. Ill break it down in a few categories:

  • Home Run tries: Memphis, SMU, Gonzaga
  • Viable but not likely: Wichita State, UTSA, UNT
  • Realistic chance: North Dakota State, Montana, Montana State, Idaho
  • School I would like personally that are not listed above: Grand Canyon University, New Mexico State
  • School I'd stay away from: UTEP (no it has nothing to do with last years game)

If the Mountain West really wanted to they could they could invite both Montana schools right now and there would likely be no hesitation to accept. I think the Montana schools would be a fun addition to the conference and both would be able to compete given time in multiple sports as well. GCU for me is a school I'd like to get more consideration for. Good basketball school and solid Olympic sports as well. They have really good support from alums and their fans. Gets the conference into a new territory with them being in Arizona. New Mexico State is another potentially fun addition and already has a natural rivalry with New Mexico. Do either of these schools bring that "it" factor? No but with us being a mid major conference, we cant afford to be super picky and choosey.

With all that being said I am not opposed to staying at 11 football members either and that's probably what ends up happening at the end of the day. I would really like to see the conference try and bolster the basketball side of things and invite a couple basketball heavy schools (GCU, Wichita State).

Personally I don't see ANY need to add another school to replace San Diego State.  None at all.  And North Dakota State would be nowhere near the top of any list I can think of as a replacement.

North Dakota State has won 9 FCS championships over 11 years, they are no chumps.   Their fanbase is rabid and they would be a great challenge for us, they are blue collar just like us.  Both Montana schools would be great too, as well as GCU for basketball.  We should consider BB only schools too to bolster our conference with losing the SUDS.  By the way, great analysis @bsuaddict, nice team choices.

I will say no to U of I (Idaho), otherwise known as DUI.  We owe them nothing, especially after what they did to our fans at the last Kibbie Dome game, Moore's last game there.  President Keiser said no more after he and his wife, among others, were verbally assaulted, had beer thrown on them, and cars vandalized.  Thus why BSU fans refer to the Vandals as Vandulls, or DUI.

Go Broncos!
