Recruiting Check

Any word on recruiting?  I see where most verbals stated they are still committed, but I don’t se much movement with new recruits.  Anyone have any insight?  Go Broncos!

I have to wonder how many scholarships they will have to give out.  This extra year of eligibility for the  "season" of 2020 has really messed everything up IMO.

I took the time to try to list every single current scholarship player on the 2022 football team right now (minus Bachmeier) as well as all of the known verbal commits for 2023 and the count I came up with RIGHT NOW is 86 total scholarship players (that includes the WR who was greyshirted this fall).  However obviously not all of those 2022 Seniors who may (or may not) have the option of returning for 2023 will be back.  Probably - at most - maybe HALF of them will be back.  By my count there are 16 Seniors who MAY have that option to return.

These are the 16 scholarship Seniors in my count:

  1. Markel Reed - He's a 4th year Senior this season who will have missed two full seasons due to injury.  He may or may not be back for 2023 (only time will tell)
  2. J.L. Skinner - He too is a 4th year Senior this season but I'm fairly sure this will be his last season at Boise State.  He thought about leaving after last season.
  3. Cade Beresford - He's a 5th year RS Senior this season.  He's playing on a team with his younger brother (again).  My guess is he will opt to return for 2023.  But that is a guess.
  4. Billy Bowens - He too is a 5th year RS Senior this season who has the option to return for 2023
  5. Stefan Cobbs - Ditto
  6. Jackson Cravens - Ditto
  7. Garrett Curran - Ditto
  8. Brandon Hawkins - Ditto
  9. Cortez Hogans - He hasn't played at all this season.  Not so sure he would be back.
  10. Dallas Holliday
  11. K.H.G. - Injury prone much like Markel Reed.  Have to wonder if he wants to come back at this point.
  12. Tyneil Hopper
  13. Tyric LeBeauf
  14. Scott Matlock - I posted a message here about a conversation I had with his sister and according to her he will be entering the NFL draft after this season.  But who knows.
  15. D. J. Schramm
  16. Riley Smith

If you figure half of those 16 will be back for 2023 and the current scholarship count including all 16 of them and all of the current verbal commits (and 1 GS) is 86 that would mean that they would have 7 more scholarships to give out for 2023.  However that doesn't account for the attrition that occurs every year, i.e., players leave, get in legal trouble, etc.  That happens every year between the end of the season thru the spring and summer.
