Point Guard

We are eight games into the season and the glaring missing piece is the play of the point guards.

I have a policy of not calling out players by name, so I will do my best to comply with my policy.  But it is hard.  To put it bluntly, the PG in many games have really struggled with turnovers.  They need to be able to handle the press and effectively dish out assists.  A PG must be a scoring threat or teams will drop back and double team our best scorers.  A PG must be a feisty defender.

I submit that one reason Max has not had good games (admit that much of this is on hm) the fact that he does not get chest high passes that he can get the shot off on time and on target.  Different  than Buzo, Max needs space to get his shot off.  He can't jump above the defender.  So when he has to reach back or up or down due to a poorly placed pass, he might as well dribble it out.  This is not all on the PG.  Everyone needs to do better at setting up the 3 point shooters.

Leon keeps saying that our PGs are young and just haven't pulled it together yet.  I agree with some of this, but over the years we have seen much younger PGs that have made a big difference in the results for this team.  So youth and chemistry with this team are fast becoming an excuse.

Defense has to be much better.  The big key to this team will be for the PGs to be much better defenders.  Max is going to continue to start and he has been a defensive liability.  So the PGs must make up for that.

The PGs must develop and perform or BSU's best team in years might end up 4th and in the NIT.

Roddie will supplant himself as the starting PG before too long. Too much talent but for whatever reason seems to be in a funk. He's a high risk/high reward offensive player. Got to take some of the bad with the really good that his game possesses. I think Jace getting the starting nod right now is good but I have no doubt Roddie will eventually take over and earn more and more minutes for us.

Since you called out players, I will comment.  I saw a danger with Roddie when his transfer was announced.  He was a 14ppg guy, but had an abundance of turnovers.  This has started to be evident when we have played tough teams.  Neither are scoring at this point so assists and avoiding turnovers will be key.

Hopefully both come along during these less intense games.

Need Roddy to play more like Jace (in control). And need Jace to play more like Roddy (creative).

Jace is shooting the 3 at 60% clip due to only taking wide open shots. Needs to find a rhythm and start shooting more than 1 a game.

Not trying to be a dick and call them out. Basketball rosters are very small. We only have 2 PGs who consistently play so I imagine most people will understand who your post was about. I took it as you were critical both Jace and Roddie's play in the original post. Which is fair. Both havent had the greatest of starts to the year but do think they will start to gel more.

Last couple of games both point guards have played better. Roddy starting to play more under control. Still shows his speed when necessary. Jace is a very capable 2nd. Shot is improving. Both need to keep improving on defense.

No problem. I just try to be careful.  I have seen some improvements with both of them.  So hopefully it will stick for more games.
