Outstanding win last night by the Boise State volleyball team

In a VERY hard fought five set match the Boise State women's Volleyball team came back from being down 4 points TWICE in the fourth set and even looked like they had lost that 4th set (and the match) before Boise State challenged an incorrect call that was reversed and finally won not only that 4th set (31-29) but also the fifth and deciding set 15-8.

You can see exactly how that amazing that 4th set went down last night here (point by point).  It was truly outstanding:

There are now three Volleyball teams in the Mtn. West with 3-0 conference marks.  Two of those three were picked to finish (in a tie) for first place in the MWC preseason coaches poll.  Those two are Utah State and U.N.L.V.   Boise State, however, was picked to finish 6th in the MWC preseason poll yet they are also 3-0 right now and tied with Utah State and U.N.L.V. as of last night.

Boise State's next game will be on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. (starts 1 hour before the Boise State football game is scheduled to begin) at New Mexico.  New Mexico is 1-2 in MWC play and lost at home 1-3 last night to Utah State.  They also lost 1-3 @ Fresno State last week and their only MWC win so far this season was a 3-2 win @ Nevada.

Utah State's next game - Saturday - will be against the very same Air Force team that Boise State defeated last night.  U.N.L.V., which had to come from behind last night to win @ Wyoming will be @ Colorado State (1-2) on Saturday.  BTW - Wyoming - which gave U.N.L.V. all it wanted last night - lost 1-3 @ Boise State last week.

The AFA will was a test of determination and endurance.  For those that might have missed the MWC video, BSU was down by one and AFA had match point in the 4th set.  BSU hit the ball long and the match was over, except Shawn challenged that the ball had been touched by an AFA player before it went out.  By golly it was touched.  BSU then won the set and forced a fifth set, which goes to 15 rather than 25.  BSU jumped out to a lead and never gave it up.  (Sort of a repeat of what 7454 wrote)

Then came New Mexico.  The Lobos had just lost to USU and was trying to avoid going 1-3.  The problem for BSU was the road trip and a hard fought game with AFA.  BSU has always gone to the hot-hand player and this year it is Paige.  But when she doesn't get her kill shots to bend down, she can give up more points than she makes.  That was the case on Saturday.  Also she was probably weary over the travel and the AFA match.  So we keep feeding Paige when Annie has  nearly a 40% kill average.

So the good thing is that even with the loss, we didn't fall in the standings.  USU was also tired after their match with New. Mexico and fell in four to AFA.  So now there are four team tied for the lead in the conference.

Nice win for the BSU Volleyball team over Fresno.  BSU won in three sets and really kept the Bdogs from getting close.

Coach Garus drew up a better game plan this time.  The sets still went to Paige Bartsch with 29 targets, but they also went to Annie Kaminski, Anabel Kotzakov, and Kiersten Van Kirk, along with the other hitters.  What did that mean?  Deception and maneuver, which are two key objectives of Sun Tsu's teachings.  The serves were aggressive, but the service aces were eight versus five service errors.  Even many of the serves that were returned were free-balls or really tough passes to the setter.

This also helps us for the next game.  As Nevada goes over the film, they will notice a difference in the method of attack from what Shawn has used in the previous games.

I thought this was Shawn's best coaching effort in over a year.  I am hoping he continues to game plan like this in the future.

Yep - I watched the entire match last night.  Solid performance by the entire team last night.

Next up last place Nevada @ Boise - Noon Saturday.
