A darn good question.  I would imagine once you stop participating the contract ends.

The other thing, do these athletes understand the tax implications?  Professional athletes have to pay taxes to every state/municipalities they play in throughout the season.  Is this the case with NIL's too?  From what I have picked  up from other comments is that this is the Wild Wild West.  No regulations or rules, other than declaring it as income and pay taxes.  Sell yourself to the highest bidder.

This is why we need the NCAA to step up and set iron clad rules.  Ha-ha, fat chance of that happening.  Or, Congress doing the dirty deed.  Since we are talking about tax dollar that they love to spend this option could actually happen, about 1% chance.

I saw somewhere that an NCAA committee is working on NIL. One proposal is to have the schools distribute NIL. Some or all of the monies could be done through trusts so some monies would be available to a kid after college. Outsiders could contribute to the pool. Taking it further, I think the size of the pool(s) would be limited for all schools, so the larger schools aren't continuing to buy players. Pro sports do this now with salary pools and we are talking about pro athletes in college. The player would still be able to use the portal. jmho
