Mtn West Championship

How do you finish the season in a tie with a team that you beat head to head and that win not count as the number one tiebreaker for you to advance over them?

I don't see San Jose State in the championship.  Despite the fact that they beat UNLV by 6 pts today.  The Massey Rankings were updated before UNLV and SJS played today and Boise State was ahead of UNLV

That was BEFORE UNLV lost today.

Boise State was # 59

UNLV was # 60 (before they lost to San Jose State today)

San Jose State was # 80

So I see the MWC 2023 football championship as Boise State and UNLV and it MIGHT be in Boise.  Just have to wait and see.

But I got a kick out of the very hometown announcers in that UNLV - San Jose State game repeatedly saying - after the game was over - that UNLV was in..........UNLV was in.........UNLV was in.

It's also somewhat humorous (to me at least) that of the three teams in the MWC that are tied at the top of the conference standings they have the following records against the two other teams this year:

Boise State - 1-0 (win over San Jose State

San Jose State - 1-1 (loss to Boise State - win over UNLV)

U.N.L.V. - 0-1 (loss to San Jose State)

To your point, this is what you get for killing divisions. The system worked and produced a clear championship game.

As of right now, Boise State is listed as the top team in the Mountain West standings on ESPN, and SJSU is in second.

What a silly way to determine who gets to play in a championship game. The irony is that BSU was robbed by computer ranking systems in the BCS era...

Okay...3 of the 4 polls are out. Anderson is the last one we are waiting for.

If I am calculating this correctly based on a simple average of the rankings, BSU is ahead by 4 spots. We were only one spot ahead of SJSU in the Anderson last week. By my calculation, Anderson would have to jump SJSU 14 spots over BSU to overcome the average. With Washington going undefeated, I do not see SJSU's win over UNLV sufficient to boost them 14 spots over BSU....but....strange things can happen, and perhaps I misunderstand how the composite is calculated.

But given our season, I think it is fun that we can at least speculate....

The Massey Ratings have

7-5 Boise State # 57 (beat Air Force by 8 yesterday) - Moved up from # 59 yesterday

8-4 Fresno State # 65 (embarrassed by San Diego State last night)

8-4 Wyoming # 67 (beat up defenseless Nevada last night)

9-3 U.N.L.V. # 68 (lost by 6 to San Jose State yesterday) - Dropped 8 spots from yesterday

7-5 San Jose State # 71 (beat U.N.L.V. yesterday) - Moved up 9 spots from yesterday

8-4 Air Force # 72 (lost by 8 to Boise State yesterday)

If you can make sense of those rankings.............I can not.

Agreed....pretty crazy. Explains why they use a composite of 4 rankings.

Anderson Colley Massey Wolfe Composite
UNLV 31 34 68 35 42.00
BSU 71 49 57 57 58.50
SJSU 72 55 71 52 62.50

Here's my spreadsheet. The Colley, Massey and Wolfe are as of today. Anderson is last week. In order for BSU and SJSU to be tied in the composite, Anderson would have to rank SJSU 15 spots ahead of BSU. Assuming I am calculating this correctly, it does not seem likely that SJSU would be ranked that far above BSU. But.....

UNLV finished with an average of 44.50, while Boise State was at 55.75 and San José State at 58.50. It’s the Rebels’ first appearance in the conference title game.

I predict BSU wins this game over UNLV.    I am thinking something like 31-24.  I think we find a way to win it.
