I have been looking into the projected lineups for 2023 for the MWC football teams

Started with Air Force and plan to work my way through Utah State.  I just finished Nevada this morning.  And I have to say Nevada - IMO - is going to be a good team this season.   They have utilized the transfer portal better than any other MWC team.  Hell maybe better than ANY other team.  Their one weakness - as I see it - is their secondary.  They have 5 defensive backs (2 CB's & 3 Safeties or 2 Safeties and a NB) and between the five players who are projected to start at those five DB spots they have a grand total of ZERO starts at Nevada.

But back to the transfers that Nevada has brought in for 2022 and 2023 here's a PARTIAL list of some of the better players they have brought in to play at Nevada:

COLORADO transfer - QB - Brendon Lewis - 2023 RS JR - He started for Colorado in every game in 2021 and redshirted in 2022 before transferring to Nevada.  He's projected to be Nevada's starter for 2023.

OREGON transfer - RB - Sean Dollars - 2023 RS JR - Had 34 carries in 2022 at Oregon and averaged 5.5 yds per carry.  He too is projected to be Nevada's starter (at RB) for 2023

CAL transfer - RB - Ashton Hayes - 2023 RS FR - He played in 4 games at Cal in 2022 and had only 1 carry (for 14 yds) but also returned 12 Kickoffs for 241 yds (20.88 yd avg.) in those 4 games.  He is projected to be Nevada's 2nd string RB for 2023

2022 ILLINOIS transfer - X-WR - Dalevon Campbell - 2023 5th year SR -  Started 7 games last season for Nevada and is projected to be their starter at the X-WR spot in 2023

U.S.C. and OREGON transfers - Z-WR's - John Jackson III (U.S.C.) and Spencer Curtis (Oregon) are the two projected top two Z-WR's for Nevada for 2023.  Jackson is not listed on the 247Sports list on their Transfer Portal page but a Nevada sports website mentioned him as SIGNED for 2023 on May 23rd (16 days ago).  Curtis transferred to Nevada in 2022 and he started 5 games in 2022 for Nevada and played in all 12 of their games.

From here on out I'm just going to list them briefly because otherwise it would take all day to do this:

TE - Keleki Latu - True JR - 2023 CAL transfer - Projected as Nevada's starting TE for 2023

A WR - Sandy Carlos - 6th year SR - 2022 Illinois transfer - Projected 2nd string A WR for 2023

TE - Dyson Frank - RS SO - 2022 Snow College transfer - Projected to be Nevada's 2nd string TE for 2022

LT - Cole Feinauer - RS SO - 2022 Colorado State transfer - Projected to be Nevada's 2nd string LT

OT/OG - Jason Rodriguez - RS SR - U.S.C. transfer - Non-starter at U.S.C.  but was a long-time backup on U.S.C.'s offensive line.  This transfer was just announced a few days ago.

RT - Kai Arneson - RS JR - 2023 Oregon transfer - Projected to be Nevada's starting RT for 2023 (6' 7" 309 lbs)

DE - Henry Ikahihifo - 5th year SR - 2023 CAL transfer - Projected to be Nevada's starting DE in 2022

DE - Louie Cresto - RS JR - 2022 Oregon transfer - Started 1 game at Nevada in 2022 played in 11 games - projected to be Nevada's 2nd string DE in 2023

RUSH DE - Elijah Winston - 6th year SR - 2022 U.S.C. transfer.  Started 7 games and played in 10 for Nevada in 2022.  Projected to be the Starter at the RUSH DE spot for Nevada in 2022

And it just goes on and on and on.

Conversely the worst team at utilizing the transfer portal - that I've seen so far - is far and away Colorado State.  That is going to be an awful football team this fall IMO.   Their O-line is littered (and that's the right word) with lower level football players from FCS, Div. II and Div. III football teams.

It's ironic - to me at least - that the best team in the MWC (perhaps the nation) at utilizing the T.P. is Nevada and the worst in the MWC is Colorado State - since CSU's head coach was the head coach at Nevada in 2021.

Im typically very weary of teams who have to overhaul their roster in one offseason via transfer portal additions. Such a hit and miss method. Of course sometimes coaches have no choice. There's a couple of recent success stories though from the MW that overhauled their rosters with transfers. 2018 and 2021 Utah State teams were practically all transfer players that went on and had good seasons. 2022 Aggie team was much of the same story and they had an abysmal season. I believe the 2020 San Jose State team had a good chunk of transfer players as well that had a heavy contribution to their success. Hawaii is a team that seemingly gets talent from the portal but fails to do much with it as of late. I will say though that Warriors looked much better in the 2nd half of last season compared to their first half. Chang should have them being competitive in most games.

Colorado State is a weird team in general. Maybe one of the top 3 schools in the conference with the highest ceilings and fail to get past mediocrity. Norvell is the kind of coach they needed. Although they were very bad last year there were some positive signs. Horton might be the best WR in the conference. Very surprised they were able to hold onto him for this year. Avery Morrow is a solid downhill RB. Clay Millan is also due to be a surprise breakout candidate this year in the conference. People dont realize that if it werent for Carson Strong at Nevada, this kid would have been their starter. Believe he was a 4* HS kid and followed Norvell to CSU. If they can get competent OL play he will be much better. His 2nd half of the season he was much better at getting the ball moving downfield with his throws VS dinking and dunking for 4 yard gains. The more confidence he gets with consistently throwing the ball downfield and seeing positive results, the Rams will be a legitimate team to watch for in conference play.
