Has Hank Peaked?

Has Hank Peaked?

Hank had his best season statistically all while playing behind his worse OL.  Actually, he has yet to have a decent OL.  On top of that, last half of last year and most of this year he was without our best RB.  He has yet to have the opportunity to excel (or peak).  Kid is tough as nails and keeps getting up.  He's been beat up by the fanbase (and yes, he sees it, he reads it.. wish he wouldn't lol), yet he leaves EVERYTHING on the field.  Not to mention he's been limited due to a bum knee most of the season.  A lot of you dog on him way more than he deserves, and I guarantee you, he is still harder on himself.

I hope to hell the staff finds a couple solid OL guys in the portal, the OL comes out nasty tough and Hank proves all the naysayers wrong.

Hank’s three seasons: True freshman year with injuries, covid year with covid, and third season with indefensibly bad o line and an FCS play caller. Hoping the staff can hit the transfer portal and upgrade the offensive line  big time. And certainly hoping that Plough can take some big steps forward. If those two things happen, I think Hank having a very good year next year. All that being said, the most concerning thing about HB is that in 3 of the 5 losses, he had the ball in his hands late and failed to get the team in position to win the game. Big time QBs make big time plays to go out and win games. Hank is yet to put the team on his back and get a W since his first start at Florida State. Hoping next year is his year and I think it can be.

I respectfully disagree that Hank Bachmeier has peaked. He's having easily his best season of the three and has shown major signs of improvement. He's also been tasked with operating a very difficult offense with more responsibility than he has in the past. Sure losing Shakir will hurt, but I see no reason to think he won't continue to improve next year.

Will he be in the Heisman race? Probably not. But I'm not sure what you saw this year compared to last year to say he can't get any better.

Do I think that Bachmeier can make small improvements? Yes. Can he elevate his skills to take over games? Can he put the team on his back in critical situations? No, so in that aspect he has hit his ceiling.

He is a great leader/example but only a good QB. Nothing wrong with that.

For Hank to shatter his current glass ceiling the following has to happen for him to gain confidence to reach the next level:

  1. Our FCS playcaller turned FBS Intern playcaller needs to take a big step up in self-examination.  He needs to realize that he doesn't have quite the right mix of players for his RPO offense, it will take a couple or three recruiting cycles to get "his" recruits.  That means HE needs to be more flexible and adapt to the constantly changing game situations at the big boy FBS level and adjust in REAL-TIME.  HE needs to give Hank the tools to succeed as a QB #1.
  2. We need our O-line to improve - JC route short-term, solid recruiting long term.  Hank needs the protection like the old Steeler Iron Curtain to give him confidence.
  3. We need a true QB coach who knows his stuff, not a combo OC/QB FBS Intern coach.  Let Plough be the OC, but get a good QB coach.  This takes $$$$'s for AA to pay his coaches.  Are reading this Jeremiah?
  4. Hank must find a way to more quickly process the field and rotate through his receivers so he is not posing with the football and getting crushed by those 330 pound d-linemen.
  5. More fast and athletic WR's who can get open, Hank has more choices.  Sigh, we are really gonna miss Shakir...

I want Hank to succeed, but with the current OC/oline situation and Hanks decision making process,  he will be handicapped.  Better OC decisions, better QB coaching, and his own personal grit and determination to learn and adapt will be necessary to climb upwards.

I think if Hank had a good offensive line he would be able to show that he is a really good quarterback.

The biggest issue I see with Hank is that he continues to make "freshman mistakes" that he should be outgrowing. Classic example is late in the SDSU game and down by 11, taking a sack to take them out of FG range.  Any 3rd year QB should know going into that play that this is the absolute worst outcome in that situation, and you absolutely MUST be prepared to throw it away if needed.  Until he stops making these kind of mistakes, I dont see him improving much beyond his current level.
