Departures from the Boise State 2022 softball team

The following is a complete listing of all of the players who were on the 2022 Boise State softball team roster who currently are NOT on the 2023 Boise State softball team roster.  The ones listed here in Bold Print are either somewhat surprising (to me) or VERY surprising.  There are 10 total - by my count - who won't be returning for the 2023 season.

# 1. Alison Seng - 2022 5th year Senior - Infielder (1st base)

# 2. India Kelly - 2022 4th year Senior - Outfielder

# 4. Eliyah Flores - 2022 RS Senior - Shortstop

# 9. Clarissa Moreno - 2022 Sophomore - Infielder

# 14. Sara Johnson - 2022 4th year Senior - Pitcher

# 15. Hailey Hayes - 2022 Sophomore - Catcher/Infielder

# 19. Hannah Bailey - 2022 5th year Senior - Pitcher

# 22. Kelsey Lalor - 2022 6th year Senior - Center fielder

# 27. Bella Rocco - 2022 Junior - Third base

# 29. Mik Anthony - 2022 RS Freshman - Infielder

Hailey Hayes, apparently,  has transferred to play for Purdue University:

The Flores sister had run out of eligibility.  I was told by a friend of Sara Johnson that she didn't agree with Waljasper's strategies and might not be back this year.  That is a big loss.  Bella is a strange case where she was playing 3rd until mid season, then became a DP or pinch hitter.  I think Autumn Bennett just beat her out of the position and came on with her hitting enough to have her start at 3rd.  Moreno just couldn't crack the lineup.  It might have been due to injury or the fact that she is a short stop and the Flores sister took that spot last year.  Mik Anthony, and didn't crack the lineup.  Hayes had a really good 2021 season as far as playing catcher.  But, with Bumcrot and Hutchinson back this year, probably not a good sign for her to get back in the line up.  When she got the offer to go to Purdue, that would be tough to turn down.

I don't understand Eliyah Flores being characterized as having run out of eligibility when she had another year of eligibility remaining due to the cancelled 2020 season.  She should have had a 6th year of eligibility (just as Kelsey Lalor had in 2022).  Plus she and her sister both didn't play at all for Oklahoma (or anyone else) in 2021.  But it doesn't matter if I understand it or not - she's apparently done.

Sara graduated this spring so I can understand her wanting to get on with life.  And if she was clashing with the pitching coach then it's probably best for her to leave - just as she did.

Bella is indeed a strange case.  She started out - her first year - with a .286 BA with two home runs.   Then she exploded in 2021 with a .336 BA and 6 HR's (2nd best BA on the team that year).  Then this year she batted only .248 with zero HR's.  And her fielding went from 1.000 (on very limited play) to 15th best on the team at .940 in 2021 with 6 errors to .966 in 2022 with 3 errors (13th best on the team).  Being the 15th and 13th best fielding player on a softball team is nothing to write home about.   Boiling it down to it's essence her first year was basically average.  Her 2nd year was terrific and her 3rd year was well below average, i.e., she had one really good year out of three.

I think if you check, Ellyah lost a year due to leaving Oklahoma mid year.  I think there is some expectation that a player declares for transfer within a period of time to keep eligibility for that transfer year.  I don't remember all the transfer rules, but when she transferred, I recall them announcing that she had one year to play.

Sorry but that's incorrect.  She and her sister both announced that they were entering the transfer portal in January of 2021.  Neither one of them played at all for Oklahoma in 2021 and their names were removed from the Oklahoma roster as soon as they announced their decisions to enter the T.P.

Here is a link to the 2021 Oklahoma batting stats webpage.  Nobody named Flores is listed in these 2021 Oklahoma stats.

The 2021 season was - for all intents and purposes - a redshirt year for both of the Flores sisters.  As neither one of them played for any college team in the spring of 2021.  Of course one of them did play in the fall exhibition games in 2021 for Boise State.

Well that is puzzling because I talked to one of the volunteers (not sure that is a reliable source) and he said that she had lost a year of eligibility and would only play the spring of 2022.

I don't see that she has entered any transfer portal, so she might have decided to quit.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that she just decided not to utilize her extra year of eligibility (from the cancelled 2020 season).  She's been playing college softball for 5 years - since the spring of 2018.  Even tho one of those 5 years she did not play at all in the spring (2021).  Apparently she just wants to get on with her life after softball.

Personally I would have loved to see her return for another year as she was the best shortstop I've ever seen play for Boise State.

Not to beat a dead horse but here's a link to the 2021 Oklahoma softball team roster.  Which had nobody named Flores on the team in 2021.

There is no question that she was not on the sooner  team in 2021.

Flores sisters announce transfer destination

Above is an article that might indicate the problem. Eliyah quit the team shortly before the season began, but did not enter the transfer portal until June.

I don't know what the rules are for eligibility and transfers these day, especially with COVID, but since she did not enter the portal, she might have lost a year.  The volunteer on the team said that she only had one year when she played because she voluntarily resigned from the team.  And according to the article did not enter the portal immediately.  So, if you have more information regarding the eligibility of a player that resigns, then transfers, then you know more than I do.

I don't claim to be an expert on all of this.  What I do know tho is when a player has never redshirted previously and then does not play at all for the team that they had played for to that point it is a redshirt year for that player.

When someone enters the T.P. is irrelevant here.  Neither of the Flores sisters played even so much as one pitch for Oklahoma in the spring of 2021.  That means they both can take 2021 as their redshirt year.  Alycia AND Eliyah BOTH did exactly that   I write that here because Elijah was listed on the Boise State roster last spring as a "RS Senior".  And Alycia was listed as a "RS SO."  And neither of them had taken a redshirt year before they played for Boise State.    As stated previously the sole reason why Eliyah has (and still has) another year of N.C.A.A. eligibility is because the 2020 season was cancelled prior to it's conclusion. When someone enters the transfer portal just is not relevant in this.  Even if both of them were still on the Oklahoma State team (as the Oklahoma team roster proves they were not) they can still BOTH take the 2021 season as their redshirt year.  And they did just that.

Alycia will be a RS Junior for the 2023 season BUT she will actually have three more years of eligibility IF she chooses to use all three.  She will be a RS Junior in the spring of 2023, a RS Senior in the spring of 2024 and THEN she can use another year of eligibility because the 2020 season was cancelled.
