Too early "What do we need for 2023" thread?

All right now, the 2023 needs:

  1. More speed and size at CB and Safeties - while we did contain Haener for most of the game we still were thoroughly burned by good passing QB's - OSU and BYU.
  2. More speed, size and athleticism at WR - we just didn't get as much separation from the defenders, thus Green didn't always have open receivers to  throw to.
  3. More roader graders on the O and D lines - our running game was very good but it doesn't hurt to blow bigger holes in the lines.  And, our D line tailed off on QB sacks a bit.
  4. Pony up money for a  solid QB coach for Green and other QB's.  We got a good one in Tiller hopefully signing soon. Dickey has to see the advantages of developing Green to his fullest potential.
  5. Pony up money for a big name, or solid up and coming OC.  Our defense is looking good, now lets get the offense tuned up with a solid OC hire who fits Green's talents.  He has so much potential that its crazy how high the sky can go with the right OC and QB coach.
  6. Pony up more money for our coaches pay, we have to stop being a waystop for them when they get poached by bigger schools.  I have to say, look at our current assistants and weed out and replace any laggers with better coaches.  Again, it goes back to assistant funds.
  7. Start the Albertsons Stadium renovations.  This will also make the sales pitches easier for coaches, alumni, and new recuits.

Have at it guys and gals, what do you think we need for 2023?

Go Broncos!

As far as player position groups for 2023 that appear to be the greatest need areas I would say that HAS to be the Defensive Tackles.  There could be as few as 5 Defensive Tackles on the team for 2023 and no new recruits in the commitment list.

Scott Matlock - according to a conversation I had with his sister a couple of months ago- is going to enter the N.F.L. draft after this season.

Divine Obichere has no more eligibility

Jackson Cravens may or may not be back for 2023 (I've not heard one way or the other)

That leaves

  1. Herbert Gums - 2023 RS JR
  2. Ahmed Hassanein - 2023 True JR (who has been playing DE recently until he was injured)
  3. Michael Callahan - 2023 RS JR
  4. Braxton Fely - 2023 True SO
  5. J. J. Falo - 2023 RS FR

Cortez Hogans is listed on the roster as a "DL" but he's more of a DE than a DT.  Also he's a RS Senior this fall and whether he is planning on returning for a 6th year is also unknown.

I agree with a lot of the talking points both you guys have made.

I don't see us getting rid of Keane unless there is a for sure upgrade out there we can afford to get. Keane imo was dealt a raw deal in coming here with the current state of the O line. I would assume Avalos would keep him on staff for at least another season.

Danielson and Poppinga are legitimate candidates to possibly leave. Maile I think will stick around for another year. BYU will most likely court Poppinga hard for their staff and it makes perfect sense for them to do so. Danielson will be tough to see go but having Ioane still on staff (hopefully) is a big plus. Already the CO-DC and would be a seamless transition to full time play-caller

When is the new O-coordinator going to be named?  Andy said right after the MW season and before 21 December, early signing day.  Wants the new O-coordinator to be on staff as soon as possible.  I can't imagine that has been sitting and stewing this whole time without reaching out to potential candidates.  Hopefully D-Coord Spencer Danielson hangs around for another year otherwise I like Frank Maile and the players play hard for him too.

As for player needs (sorry if some of these are repeats);

  1. Need WRs who can get open, there was no separation against even average DBs.
  2. DBs with size and speed.  Seems they were exposed a bit against better QBs.
  3. We have a trove of LBs, need them to step-up to the next level.

Im sure Avalos has had some contact with potential guys for the OC spot but everything he said has kind of pointed towards Miller being the guy. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him get the play-calling duties for our bowl game.

With that being said, circumstances always change and I wouldn't put it past Avalos to wait until after the early signing period to make a hire. One name I kind of want to throw in the mix is actually the current OC of the team we will be going up against in the bowl game. Mike Bloesch. His offense at North Texas has been very solid this season. His offense has been in the top 20-30 in almost every major statistical category since he got named the full time OC in 2021. Not only has he coached QBs he has also coached OL and very successful as well. Helped lead North Texas to having one of the best rushing attacks in 2021 (5th in the country in yards per game). He also has very strong Texas ties(coached at Houston previously along with Tulsa and big texas high schools) which Coach Avalos has put an even stronger emphasis on with his recruiting. I personally think he checks all the boxes. I know some people would be discouraged cause the hire isn't from a Power 5 school but those same people need to realize that just because you hire a coach from a power 5 school doesnt mean he is automatically going to overperform at a smaller school

My question would then be, could we get him to come here though?

Sounds like Poppinga is leaving per Bj's newest article. I used to just dislike BYU but that is developing into a strong hate. I'm still hopeful that Danielson stays though.

It makes perfect sense though for Poppinga to leave and go to BYU. Played there and coached. As much as I hate saying this but they are now a step up from what we are here. He seems like a good guy and I hope he can keep moving up the coaching ranks again

Im with ya on Danielson. That guy i have a soft spot for when he chose to stay with us versus leaving to go to Auburn with a lot of the old staff. Then add on that he took the interim role while we went through the hiring the process for a head coach. It feels like the players really love him as well and I love his enthusiasm in interviews we get to see each week.

I have to believe, as I've mentioned before, that the new O.C. is a done deal at this point.  Dickey - I would think - hasn't been just sitting on his hands.   Everyone knows Koetter is here as the O.C. on a temporary basis.   I'm not even sure he's going to be on the staff for the bowl game (I assume he will be).  So for Dickey to NOT be working on his replacement would be incompetence on his part.  And Dickey doesn't strike me as the incompetent sort.
