New Boise State football coach Spencer Danielson is putting his staff together for the 2024 season. We’re keeping track of the announcements, including those remaining on staff from Andy Avalos’ group in 2023.
Here’s a current look at the staff…
Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks – Bush Hamdan will return as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Hamdan received a 2-year deal worth $460,000 in 2024 and $480,000 in 2025.
“Over the past year I have come to get to know Bush Hamdan, working closely with him. In that time, he has shown that his knowledge of the game and creativity in calling plays is impressive. He and I both agree in the approach that our offense should always be opportunistic and on the attack. Asking Bush to stay was one of my first priorities in building this staff and I am incredibly excited that he will remain at Boise State.” -Spencer Danielson
Running backs – James Montgomery is back to lead Ashton Jeanty and the running backs again in 2024. Montgomery, who came to Boise State in 2023 after serving as the running backs coach at Fresno State, signed a 2-year deal worth $235,000 in 2024 and $245,000 in 2025.
“James Montgomery has done a wonderful job guiding our incredible stable of running backs this past year and I know they will only get better as we head into 2024. He is an energetic coach that always has our backs ready to perform and has shown he can develop backs to compete at the highest level. I’m excited he will be staying on staff here at Boise State.” -Spencer Danielson
Wide receivers – Former Boise State wide receiver Matt Miller will remain in his current role as wide receivers coach. Miller, who has led the group since 2020, will make $215,000 in each of the next two years.
“As a Boise State alumnus, Matt Miller knows just what upholding the tradition of this program is all about. Boise is his home and I am so glad he is staying in the Treasure Valley for another year. Our wide receiver corps will benefit greatly going into next season by the consistency he brings and his ability to develop that unit into one that will be among the best in the Mountain West. I look forward to a lot of growth in that position group next year.” -Spencer Danielson
Offensive line – Tim Keane will return for his fourth season as offensive line coach. After leading one of the best offensive line units at Boise State in several years, he gets a $25,000 raise from 2023 and will make $260,000 in each of the next two years.
“Tim Keane has done a phenomenal job coaching one of the best offensive lines in the country this year. His work in molding that group into one of the best lines Boise State has seen in several years is incredibly admirable and his ability to recruit and develop nationally recognized players stands out. Keeping him in the Treasure Valley was a priority of mine and one I am elated to have accomplished.” –Spencer Danielson

Defensive coordinator/defensive line – Erik Chinander was promoted to defensive coordinator to replace Danielson, who takes over as head coach. Chinander, who will also coach the defensive line, will make $440,000 in each of the next two years. Chinander arrived at Boise State prior to the 2023 season after previously serving as the defensive coordinator at both UCF and Nebraska.
“I am really excited that Erik is taking the defensive coordinator role and staying at Boise State. He has such a bright and innovative defensive mind, and truly is an elite teacher of the game. He focuses on the development of players on and off the field and is dedicated to building long-lasting relationships.” -Spencer Danielson
