Bronco Nation News is taking a look at 20 key questions and storylines facing the Boise State football team entering the 2023 season. First up in our series is question No. 19: Who starts at cornerback for the Broncos against Washington?
Jonah Dalmas will likely become statistically the best kicker in Boise State history by the end of the 2023 season.
Dalmas needs just 12 field goals to pass Kyle Brotzman for the career record of 67. He’s made 26 and 23 field goals in each of the past two seasons, so 12 should be almost a lock.
The 27 field goals made in 2021 is the single-season record for the Broncos, and 23 made last year is fourth. So Dalmas already has two of the four best single-season marks at Boise State, and will soon have the career record. What’s crazy? Dalmas has a COVID year available in 2024 if he wants it, and two more big seasons could have him challenge the NCAA record of 98 career field goals.
Dalmas is 56 of 63 for his career, including 17 of 20 on field goals of beyond 40 yards. He’s as solid as they come, and a huge asset for the Broncos heading into 2023.
Punter James Ferguson-Reynolds also returns after averaging 41.8 yards per punt as a freshman. His stats got better as the season went on as he adjusted to the American football game. He had never played American football until the Oregon State opener after growing up in Australia. Teammates rave about him, so his stats should only improve.
B.J. Rains and John Mallory spent 30 minutes discussing Dalmas, Ferguson-Reynolds and the rest of Boise State’s special teams on Wednesday’s edition of Bronco Nation News LIVE. Watch the episode below, and make sure to subscribe to the BNN YouTube channel for the latest Boise State video content.
