Bronco Nation News is taking a look at 20 key questions and storylines facing the Boise State football team entering the 2023 season. Next up in our series is question No. 14: What should be expected from the tight end group in 2023?
Riley Smith had a career year for the Broncos in 2022, hauling in 25 catches for 214 yards and a touchdown. Can he improve upon his numbers as a sixth-year senior in 2023?
Smith returns as the unquestioned leader both on and off the field for a tight end group that has a combined four career catches behind him. With Tyneil Hopper and Kurt Rafdal both gone, the Broncos are very thin and inexperienced after Smith.
Matt Lauter, a redshirt sophomore, had four catches for 40 yards last season and is expected to have a much bigger role this season. Austin Terry, Luke Vorhees, Cayden Dawson and Jack Beresford also figure to get increased time as well.
Smith is a steady, reliable veteran, but the Broncos will need others to step up at tight end in 2023.
B.J. Rains and Jay Tust discussed the topic on Bronco Nation News LIVE on Tuesday. Watch the episode below:
