Women's Basketball Transfer Portal

I was browsing around and found the women's transfer portal.  Of BSU note, Anna Ostlie is listed on the HeatCheck portal site.  So far, she is the only one listed from BSU.  I didn't look very hard, but I didn't see any transfers into BSU.

I will be somewhat sad to see Anna leave.  She is a streaky 3 point shooter and when she is on, she can't miss.   Last year, she scored 7.5 per game as a starter.  But this year, with the Fab Four freshmen gaining minutes, she had less minutes and averaged 5.5 per game.  Anna will find a team that can she can help.

So far, I am happy to see that Tatum Thompson is sticking with BSU.  She was injured early and came back to help the front line.  I talked to a coach about her injury and there was some concern that she might not stay the course with BSU.  When she is really healthy, I expect her to be the athletic slasher and mid range shooter that we need on the team.

From some of BNN reports, it seems that Dani Bayes was struggling at being so far from home.  So hopefully she has found her home away from home.

Mia Hansen and Natalie Pasco are really good players and they will continue to be important for the growth of the team.

On May 12th, Grand Canyon U made it official and added Anna Ostlie to their Women's team.  I have not seen an announcement from BSU as far as an addition to take her scholarship.  I think there is at least one non-scholarship player on the team from last year.  Or we might see an announcement in the next few days.  There have been several transfers to our other teams recently.

BSU recently posted their 2023-24 roster and there isn't an addition to take Anna's scholarship.  Rather than looking for a transfer, I suspect Gordie gave the scholarship to a current walk-on player.  There are 15 players listed and that is the total scholarships the NCAA permits for a D1 women's basketball team.  I am pretty sure Mackenzie Naro was the walk-on last year.

So why would Gordie resist bringing the best transfer player into the fold?  I speculate that one reason was  to keep the team chemistry in tact.  He stated publicly that after the 2020-21 season he decided he had to start over and rebuild the roster based on locker room problems.  Another reason is he believes his 2022 class was the best class he has ever had.  Last year's four freshmen showed their individual talents on given nights.  Now, those players need to be more consistent and put it all together each night.

The lone addition to this team is a JC transfer from CSI.  Alyssa Christensen is 6'3 and was a solid player for CSI's top 5 ranked team.  She is from the Treasure Valley and should fit in well with the current players.

I am pretty interested to see how this team builds from a better than .500 MWC team.  I am expecting a better season.
