What does Ohio State's loss today mean for the Bowl Game picture

I saw a tweet this last week about the possibility of the Big Ten not being able to fill all of their bowl game tie-ins and it had to do with the Michigan @ Ohio State game.   And it was suggested the the loser of the MWC championship game might be headed to what used to be known as the Cactus Bowl in Phoenix as a Big Ten replacement.

Now that  # 2 ranked Ohio State has been SOUNDLY beaten (at home) by # 3 ranked Michigan I'm wondering how that all is supposed to work out.  I say that because I count 7 bowl game tie-ins for the Big Ten and they have 9 bowl eligible teams.  So how can anyone say they won't have enough to fill all of their bowl game tie-ins?

Mmm sounds like talk and nothing more. Idk why the MW would get that bowl game, but I'm also not all that knowledgeable on that subject.

I was incorrect.  The Big Ten actually has NINE bowl game tie-ins (not 7) plus they will also have at least one team in the so-called "Playoff" after # 3 ranked Michigan's decisive win over # 2 ranked Ohio State.

Here are all of the Big Ten's bowl game tie-ins for 2022/23

1. Rose Bowl vs. Pac-12
Big Ten Champion goes here if not in the College Football Playoff, or highest-ranked Big Ten team

2. Vrbo Citrus Bowl vs. SEC

3. Outback Bowl vs. SEC

4. SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl vs. Pac-12

5. TransPerfect Music City Bowl vs. SEC

6. New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs. ACC

7. Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs. Big 12

8. Redbox Bowl vs. Pac-12*
Logistics on the Redbox Bowl TBD

9. Quick Lane Bowl vs. MAC

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs. a Big 12 team is the bowl game that used to be known as the Cactus Bowl.  That is the bowl that has been discussed as a possible landing spot for the loser of the MWC championship game.  The winner of the MWC championship game will go to the L.A. Bowl but the loser of that game can go wherever they want (basically).  And this HAS been discussed by those in-the-know on these sorts of things.   B.J. has discussed this (among others) and I believe B.J. thinks the likely Big 12 opponent would be the team he loves, i.e., Kansas.

P.S. The payout on the Guaranteed Rate Bowl game - in 2019 - was $1,625,560 and that was three years ago now.

  1. That definitely makes it sound more likely. I would be curious if there are some other group of 5 conferences/ teams that would be looked at for that bowl game. But would be a good place to land.

Here are the MWC bowl game tie-ins:

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs MAC
Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl vs Pac-12
New Mexico Bowl vs Conference USA
– Barstool Arizona Bowl vs MAC
EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl vs Conference USA

Mountain West has an affiliation to fill if needed …

– Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs Big Ten or Big 12

Other possibilities to be determined among the Group of Five conferences …

Cure Bowl vs Group of Five
RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl vs Group of Five
SERVPRO First Responder Bowl vs Group of Five
Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl vs Group of Five

The Big Ten MAY have two teams in the so-called 4 team "playoff".  Currently the top 5 teams in the rankings are:

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. T.C.U.
  4. U.S.C.
  5. Ohio State

However U.S.C. plays next Friday at home vs. # 14 ranked Utah for the PAC 12 championship.  And T.C.U. is playing next Saturday at home vs. # 12 ranked Kansas State for the Big 12 championship.  U.S.C. is only favored by 3 points in their game vs. Utah and T.C.U. is only favored by 2 1/2 points in their game vs. Kansas State.  If EITHER of those two teams (T.C.U. or U.S.C.) lose this week it's very likely that three of the four teams in the playoff will be Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State.  If BOTH U.S.C. and T.C.U. lose next weekend then it's a virtual certainty that Michigan and Ohio State will both be in the playoff.  That would leave the Big Ten with only 7 bowl eligible teams to go to 9 bowl games (including the Rose Bowl).

That is the ranking today.  When it really matters,  if all teams listed win this week, don't be surprised that Ohio State jumps into the top 4.  If Alabama was 5 or 6, you could bet that Sabin would stomp around, gripe and complain until the 'Tide made it into the top 4.  Ohio State and Alabama are the two most entitled teams in all of college football.

Never heard a more true statement!
