Tyneil Hopper into the transfer portal

Yup stinks but dont blame him. We have had a frustrating amount of good talent at the TE position that seem very underutilized. We also seem to have a good one currently in the waits with Lauter. Given that he has had very limited chances, I did like what i see from him. Big body and can move in open space. Also factor in that we have 2 more TE's coming in this 2023 class as well.

Wasn't Riley Smith moving on?   I thought Hopper would be starting next year.

I dont think we know for sure on Riley Smith yet. I don't remember any kind of announcement. Hopper is also a Georgia kid. I wouldn't be surprised to see him want to play closer to home for his final year.

Will Ferrin, walk-on placekicker and punter, has also decided to enter the transfer portal.

He played in 7 games this fall.   He punted twice this season and averaged 35.5 yds per punt.

He also outkicked Jonah Dalmas on Kickoffs this season.  Ferrin had 36 kickoffs this year and averaged 61.0 yds per kickoff.  Dalmas averaged 60.7 yds per kickoff on 41 kickoffs.

With Hopper entering the transfer portal and with the possibility that Riley Smith may not return as a 6th year Senior for 2023 that would leave Boise State with only ONE Tight End with a lot of playing experience.  That being Matt Lauter and he will be a RS Sophomore in 2023.   Lauter has played in all 13 games so far this season with 1 start.

Russell Corrigan, a 2022 RS Sophomore, has not played in any games this season.  He didn't play in any games in 2021 either but he did play - as a true freshman - in 2 of the 7 games in 2020.

Those are the only two tight ends on the Boise State 2022 roster who have any playing experience other than Hopper and Smith.

I think we have 2 tight ends committed right now for 2022.  Not sure they would have immediate impact for 2023 though.

Maybe we hit the transfer portal, there are plenty of kids in there
