TODAY is the day

Today is the day the Mountain West Conference's 2023 softball championship tournament begins.

Game # 1 featuring # 5 seeded Fresno State and # 4 seeded San Jose State is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. MT (10 a.m. PT) and the winner of this game will then play Boise State at 5 p.m. MT today.  The loser of this game is eliminated from the tournament.

All games can be watched on television via the Mountain West streaming TV channel or online via the Mountain West broadcast guide.

The other side of the bracket has # 3 seeded Colorado State paired against # 6 seeded Nevada.  Nevada just defeated Colorado State in two of their three games in the last week of regular season conference play so an upset is not unlikely here.  The winner of this game will then face # 2 seeded San Diego State. Colorado State defeated San Diego State in two of their three regular season conference games by scores of 10-5 and 3-2 in the 1st and 3rd games of their conference series.  Nevada also defeated San Diego State in one of their two scheduled conference games this season by a score of 10-1 in 6 innings.

Looks like Boise State's opponent in today's game will be San Jose State.  The Spartans won in thrilling fashion in the bottom of the 7th inning in a game that remained scoreless until San Jose State finally scored the one and only run in that game.

Jennessa Ullegue, San Jose State's ace pitcher, pitched all 7 innings vs. Fresno State today.  So hopefully Boise State won't have to deal with her again.  Last time Boise State faced Ullegue the game went 9 innings and Boise State won in a similar fashion as today's game ended with a 1-0 win on a two out RBI double by Boise State's Eliyah Flores in the top of the ninth inning.   And Ullegue pitched all 9 innings in that game (as did Taylor Caudill for BSU).  I would THINK that San Jose's State's pitcher for their 2nd game today would be Lacie Ham.  But with softball ya never know.

The Colorado State vs. Nevada game has taken OVER ONE HOUR to complete the first two innings.

# 6 seeded Nevada is leading # 3 seeded Colorado State 4-0 after two.   But at the rate it's going - unless Nevada wins by Run Rule - this game might push the Boise State game beyond the 5 p.m. MT start time in their game vs. San Jose State.

Looks like the Colorado State - Nevada game WILL be won by Run-Rule by Nevada.  Nevada is now leading CSU 11-0 in the top of the 5th inning.  And they still have just two outs in the 5th (after a 3 run home run).

Colorado State and Fresno State are now both eliminated from the 2023 MWC softball championship tournament.   The 4 remaining teams are now in a double-elimination tournament with the next game being Boise State (home team) vs. San Jose State and Nevada vs. the # 2 Seed (home team) San Diego State.

Boise State played @ San Jose State on April 15th and 16th this year.  Boise State won the first of two games on the 15th by a score of 1-0 in the 9th inning.  Both starting pitchers - Ullegue for SJS and Caudill for BSU - pitched all nine innings of that game.

On the 16th Boise State won by Run-Rule in 6 innings by a score of 10-2.  Lindsey Walljasper pitched all 6 innings of that game and got the win.  The losing pitcher for SJS was Lacie Ham.   Ham will likely be the starting pitcher for SJS vs. Boise State today.   Ham has a 5.56 E.R.A. and a WHIP of 1.85 and a WL record of 6-13, 35 appearances, 17 starts, 5 complete games 131.0 innings pitched.  She has given up 162 hits in those 131 innings as well as 91 total runs and 81 earned runs.  Opposing hitters have hit .297 against her this season.

The question on my mind is does Boise State go with Taylor Caudill today vs. Lacie Ham or instead go with Lindsey Walljasper and save T.C. for the likely match-up tomorrow vs. San Diego State?  Walljasper vs. Ham would be a rematch of the April 16th game that Boise State won 10-2 in 6 innings.   They could do that and always bring in T.C. if needed.

So much for that - the lineup for the game has Taylor Caudill as the starting pitcher for Boise State.  Of course it also has Ullegue listed as San Jose State's staring pitcher and she just finished pitching a full seven inning game about 2 1/2 hours ago.  It will be about 3 hours when the game starts about 5 p.m. today.

I think Justin panicked in the seventh.  BSU was ahead by one.  Caudill allowed only three runs and was steady in the sixth.  He should have trusted her to hold the lead.  Lindsey has been a really good pitcher for us, but she has struggled closing out the game at times.  Hopefully they can pull it together tomorrow.

I don't know if it was a panic move.   But there is no doubt it was a bad decision.   I couldn't believe he (or Allie Walljasper?) pulled T.C. when there were only 2 outs left to win the game.  I'm all for bringing in a new pitcher to make it difficult on the hitters but you don't do it with only 2 outs to go.  That's done all the time in baseball - as they have closers who specialize in that - but this isn't baseball.

There is an old expression that comes to mind................snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Chances of Boise State now winning this tournament are slim to none.  Boise State would have to beat Nevada today and then beat the loser of the San Diego State - San Jose State game later today.  And then they would have to beat the winner of that SDSU - SJS game TWICE on Saturday.  And the way Nevada has been playing at this tournament I'm not even confident Boise State could beat them today.

IF.............and that's a big IF...................Boise State beats Nevada today it's looking like the late game today would be Boise State and a rematch against San Jose State.   San Diego State is thrashing San Jose State 6-0 in the top of the 3rd inning.   San Jose State's ace, Ullegue, lasted only 2/3rds of the 1st inning as the Aztecs blasted her for 4 earned runs before being replaced by Lacie Ham.

This first game today will likely be a run-rule win for the Aztecs.
