Point Guard for 23-24

Within a month, BSU will open off season strength & conditioning and player run workouts (some coaching is allowed in basketball). This will be the beginning of what is to come with Leon's SuperTeam.  While I do think this will be an improved team from last year, it might be surprising to see what it will look like in November.

I have a practice in posting on any message board to not say anything that disparages BSU current players.  Having said that, I will post critiques that a player will hopefully take as an area of improvement; a comment that might help him or her improve.  So, my comment below is meant to point out areas of improvement, and not disparage the player(s).

Let's take the point guard. Most of us, me included, expect to see Roddie Anderson III as the starter.  His stats are impressive when it comes to scoring.  13.1 point per game, 3.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and he was as a freshman able to play 31 minutes per game.  The Big West is hardly a standout in NCAA basketball, but there are some good teams.  UC Irvine and UCSB made it to post season.  The UCSD Tritons were third to the last.  Roddie's areas for improvement has to be defense and more important, turnovers.  Most point guards have a bit more turnovers than their teammates.  So as a freshman, Roddies turnovers of 3.2 per game might be understandable.  But in the MountainWest, that is a noted area of improvement.

The other PG contender will likely be Jace Whiting.  Jace was subbed in for defense late in several important games.  He has a year under his belt and knows MWC competition.  He hasn't averaged the points that Roddie did, but his assist to turnover ratio was 2:1.  Jace got experience in managing the games when Shaffer Jr. went down.  Not every game was great, but the experience should be very valuable.

It will be an interesting competition and I am excited to see who starts at the beginning of next year and who is the starter when we start MWC play.

Go Broncos.

I also think Chris Locket will see some time at pg as well. Should be pretty well covered at that position.

Lockett describes himself as a combo guard. He should be capable of taking the point when needed against bigger guards or in case of fouls or injury.  I am hoping he is the natural successor to Agbo and has the commitment to stick in the program more than one year.  I think it might take two years, but he could be developed into a quality player.

Edit: I am going amend this post a little.  As I look at Lockett a little more, I am inclined to say that he is going to really compete at PG this year.  I still think Whiting will compete very well and might be named the starter due to defense.  But looking at the NBA draft, the PGs going in the first round are all about 20 years old.  Lockett has about two years to be fully NBA ready and be drafted in the first round.  Rice could very will give him a shot to run the team.
