My WILD GUESSES at the 2023 Boise State football coaching staff

It’s not always about the yards.  3rd and medium and give up a 1st down to extend a drive and keep the D on the field.  We need to stop those.

Ok, so I’ll munch on crow.  They really shut SDSU down.  Hopefully they can perform just as well vs Fresno.  I saw Biggers get hurt close to the end of the game, I hope he’ll be at 100%.  Go Broncos!

BUMP

I will say that Koetter is only a short term solution.  But how short is short?  Short could be the end of this season, or short could be one more year.  Or maybe it is as long as TG plays.  I know some of you are thinking no way.

But, here is the potential of TG to the NFL.  As well as he plays as a running QB, he has a minimal shot at the NFL.  If TG develops his passing skills, he will have the tools to be a 1-2 round pick.  The transfer of Bachmier indicates that Koetter wanted TG to be the starter.  This was Koetter's decision and he owns it.  Koetter could easily want to see TG elevated to the NFL.  Koetter knows how to teach QBs in all skills.  He has the confidence of the coaches and the team to make the QB room successful.

If TG develops his passing game by the end of the 2023 season, he will be a draft candidate.  If he takes one more year and shows real progress, he will be a 1-2 round selection.  I think Koetter would seriously think about staying that long to really put the stamp on his legacy at BSU.

I remember seeing Biggers get slightly injured.  It didn't look like a major injury to me - but then again what do I know.  Also I thought I saw him return to the game after that.   If that's true then it wasn't anything serious.

The only coach I have questions about on your list is Demario Warren.  I say this because the DBs were supposed to be the strength of the D, but they have constantly given up big plays.  If we give up on the OC and the O-line coaches for under performance, maybe we need to also look at the DBs coach.  Go Broncos!

You make a valid point here.

Also, I don't think there is any way that Avalos moves forward with only 3 offensive coaches. Even if he does give Miller OC duties, with all of the young QB's on the roster, we absolutely NEED a QB coach.  Preferably a really good one, because we have not been able to develop QB's for a long time.  Rypien and Hank both failed to develop over their 4 years and played some of their best games as Freshmen. (Rypien @ Virginia, Hank @ FSU).

I don't disagree with your take here BUT.................where is the money going to come from to PAY THEM ALL?   As I see it the "elephant in the room" regarding all of these discussions is the paltry 2.2 (or 2.1?) million that is budgeted by Boise State for their 10 assistant football coaches (that's separate from the head coach salary, bonuses, etc).   Having only roughly 2 million for TEN assistant football coaches these days is just flat out ridiculous.

There are some assistant coaches who made 2.5 million in 2021.  Such as Clemson DC Brent Venables.  And that was LAST season.  It's almost certainly gone up since then.  The Clemson OC was paid 2.12 million in 2021.  Texas A & M's DC was paid 2.1 million. Former Boise State player and DC Pete Kwiatkowski was paid 1.7 million in 2021 as the Texas DC, etc., etc., etc.  So for Boise State to budget only roughly 2 million total for TEN assistant football coaches seems absurd.  That budget needs to be doubled at the very least.

Yeah!  In order to do this, BSU has to raise cost of season tickets and sell out every game.  The dollars have to come from somewhere.  Fair or not, football has to pay for all Title IX sports.  Unfortunately we are NOT going to get into the Big12 or the PacXX.  The other MWC teams are bitching because BSU gets more money from the TV contract.  The state nor BSU academics pay for sports programs.  So be sure to go to the games (watching on TV doesn't do anything), drink a lot of expensive beer inside the stadium, buy a sports pass to support other sports ($100, cheap) and support business that support BSU sports.  That's about all we can do until a miracle happens.  Until then, these 30 year old kids will have to live on $210,000 per year and the cost of living is going up.

I frankly don't see that as much of a problem myself.  Not when Jeremiah Dickey is the A.D. at Boise State.  His forte is raising funds.  He EXCELS at it.   He's already raised millions and millions and millions of $$$$ for Boise State.  Raising 2 million per year to increase the asst. football coaches budget shouldn't be too difficult for the ATHLETIC Director at Boise State.

Since BSU is a state institution, isn’t the HC salary set by the state and a pool of money for assistants also set by the state education department?

HC salary yes.....................Assistants salaries no (as far as I know).   But even if that is the case the matter should be pressed on them as being ridiculously underfunded when compared to other schools.

Regardless of that here is a quote from 2017 (5 years ago now) found online from roanoke.com:

"Do boosters pay college coaches?"

"In fact, the coaches are mostly paid by athletic boosters. Their base salary, paid by the university, is usually in the $200,000 - $300,000 range for most Power 5 conference coaches."
Yet as I pointed out earlier many assistant football coaches (from Power 5 schools) are paid well over 1 million per year.   The difference between their base salaries and total salaries are made up with $$$$ from that school's boosters.   If it can be done in Power 5 NCAA schools then it can be done (to a lesser extent obviously) in the Group of 5 schools.
