My WILD GUESSES at the 2023 Boise State football coaching staff

Page 1 of 3Next

HC - Andy Avalos

AHC/Special Teams Coordinator/Running Backs - Keith Bhonapha

AHC/Defensive Line - Frank Maile

OC/Wide Receivers - Matt Miller

DC/Inside LB's - Spencer Danielson

Co-DC/Safeties - Kane Ioane

O-Line/Tight Ends - Nate Potter

C0-Special Teams Coordinator/Edge - Kelly Poppinga

CB's - Demario Warren

This, of course, is contingent on none of the current coaches leaving for "greener" pastures, or more firings, etc.

IF this is how things actually work out (I estimate that to be about a 1 percent chance of happening) then the assistant coaching staff would be made up of eight coaches versus the nine coaches this year.  That would also mean the remaining coaches would be dividing up the $$$$ that was budgeted for the ninth coach.

I really dont know what is going to happen for the OC/QB/OL coaching spots. I feel like the OC/QB we kind of always had tied together. I can only really remember a few times that wasnt the case. I'd agree though with Miller. It does seem like they want to prep him to possibly lead the play calling duties. If that doesnt happen I imagine the next place people would look are guys like Dinwiddie, Kirby Moore and Hamdan since those 3 are the ones brought up the most from few talks ive seen. One guy I'd throw in the mix even though it seemed like he left here on pretty sour terms would be Lee Marks. I just got the feeling part of him leaving was due to not getting the OC title when Hill left for ASU. Its hard to name potential outside the Boise State family for coaches since we seem to want to keep everything in house. Even though some may not be realistic possibilities but Scott Frosts name might get floated around. Matt Wells is a name I would keep a close eye on as well. Could always dip back into the Montana State tree as well and look at Taylor Housewright. First year calling plays for the Bobcats but has had solid success through 4 games with his team averaging nearly 44 points per game. He's worked under Joe Moorehead for a couple of seasons

My best guess is Andy is maybe 70% to be on sidelines as head coach for the first game in 2023.   I am already trying to think of the inevitable replacement for Avalos.

I would bet a good amount of money Andy Avalos is not the Head coach for first game of 2024.

Based on some of the info. coming out of Nebraska, I hope Dickey and Avalos are smart enough to not let Frost anywhere near this program.  Although I loved Dinwiddie as a player, I don't think he would be a good fit for OC without any college  coaching experience.  I would be all for Kirby Moore as OC, and Lee Marks is another one that I wish we could get back.

Also, I don't think there is any way that Avalos moves forward with only 3 offensive coaches. Even if he does give Miller OC duties, with all of the young QB's on the roster, we absolutely NEED a QB coach.  Preferably a really good one, because we have not been able to develop QB's for a long time.  Rypien and Hank both failed to develop over their 4 years and played some of their best games as Freshmen. (Rypien @ Virginia, Hank @ FSU).

That's a take. Im not going to argue on Hanks behalf cause 4 years with having 3 different OCs im sure isnt ideal for development along with being hit the most every season as a QB.

Rypien however is baffling to me to have that take on. The guy is just outside of the top 10 in FBS CAREER passing yards and had a 90-29 TD/INT mark and went 37-12 as a starter. The last 5-6 games of the 2017 season all the way through the 2018 season he showed massive improvements. Im not going to argue that he had good games as a freshman because thats true but Ryp had a career of having great games outside of his freshman year.

My point isn't to take away from what Rypien accomplished.  Yes, he had some great games.  He also had some mind-numbingly terrible games (WSU, anyone?).  As a 3rd and 4th year starter, he was splitting time....  which is a shame, because with a strong QB coach to truly develop him, based on his talent, background, and skills, he should have been a lock for a 1st or 2nd day draft pick, ala Derek Carr or .Josh Allen.  Instead, he had to go the much harder route of UDFA.

Don't you find it odd that BSU can continue to recruit these 4* QB's, and yet we have never had one drafted since McMillan?  Why aren't they developing?  Ryan Finley, after losing his job to Rypien, transfers and is a 4th round pick.  One was developed, the other was not.

No i dont find it odd at all. Its not so much that they are not developing. NFL scouts and coaches would rather take risks in a middling Power 5 guy who has the "look" and tools of a NFL QB even if his college career wasnt as productive as lets say the Group of 5 QB who passes for nearly 4k yards each season with 30+ TDs who maybe doesn't have the strongest arm or build of what they feel NFL QBs should be. Hunter White kind of alluded to this as much last night when he said he was in High school talking to Arizona State at the time when he was getting recruited and they told him they couldn't offer a LB who was under 6'2 and x amount of pounds. They would rather take their chances on a higher profiled guy who is 6'3 230 and if he fails, so what. He had all the physical traits. So that tells me that most likely happens at the NFL level to with QBs and other positions. Now there are definitely the outliers. Josh Allen, Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis, Carzon Wentz, Bailey Zappe etc.. who have went from being solid Group of 5/FCS QBs who got drafted.

Also, this is just my opinion. Once you get past the 5th round of a draft I feel like its almost better to go the UDFA route. Teams will come calling and you get to pick out the best spot for yourself. Doesn't mean it always works out. But you can potentially put yourself in the best situation to succeed. Yes I imagine its a bummer not being able to hear your name on tv but at the same time its not the end of the world either.

The only coach I have questions about on your list is Demario Warren.  I say this because the DBs were supposed to be the strength of the D, but they have constantly given up big plays.  If we give up on the OC and the O-line coaches for under performance, maybe we need to also look at the DBs coach.  Go Broncos!

People really think the DBs have been a problem? Barely giving up over 150 yards per game through the air. Outside of the Oregon State game I feel like they have been solid. UTEP game we couldnt stop a nose bleed towards the end but thats kind of understandable when you are on the field for seemingly 3/4ths of the game.
