Kelsey Hall enters portal

Such a bummer cause it seemed like everything (pre tournament at least) pointed towards her returning to Boise next season.

Also sorry if theres like 3 of these posts queued up. For some reason my phone was being dumb and redirecting me somewhere else rather than letting me do the captcha stuff to confirm i wanted to post the thread. You can delete the others.

Definitely a bummer but that's the price one pays for having the transfer portal.   Boise State gets a top S.E.C. pitcher from the portal but loses their best hitter.  And so it goes.

That having been said you have to wonder what prompted this decision.

So - TO DATE - the 2023 Boise State softball team will be losing (at the very least) the following:

DP - Kelsey Hall - 2023 RS Junior - .385 BA - 1.358 OPS - .854 Slg % - .504 OB %

3B - Autumn Bennett - 2023 4th year Senior - .377 BA - 1.062 OPS - .585 Slg % - .477 OB %

SS - Eliyah Flores - 2023 Grad student - .313 BA - .997 OPS - .605 Slg % - .392 OB %

C - Serena Huchingson - 2023 RS Senior - .313 BA - 1.106 OPS - .616 Slg % - .490 OB %

P - Lindsey Walljasper - 2023 5th year Senior - 4.24 ERA - 1.54 WHIP - 13 W - 7 L - 102.1 IPs

P.S.  Assuming that Kelsey Hall transfers elsewhere the Boise State players with the most games played in 2023 as the Designated Player are Brooklyn Pettis and Abby Bumcrot with 3 games each in 2023 as the DP.   Other returning Boise State softball players who played 1 game as the DP in 2023 were Ashlyn Whalen, Zoe Karam, Megan Lake and Alycia Flores.  Kelsey Hall was the DP for Boise State in 2023 in 27 games.

Maybe Boise State should bring in Fresno State's shortstop Alesia Denby as she announced yesterday that she has also entered the transfer portal.  Denby was named to the 2023 NFCA Pacific All Region team as a shortstop.   She was also Fresno State's 2nd best hitter with a .314 BA and an OPS of 1.036 and a Slugging % of .615 with 10 home runs.   She'd be an excellent replacement for Eliyah Flores.

Schultz seems like a guy who has a great eye for talent. Going to trust that he is able to bring in a few more pieces that could help get us back over the hump and into the tourny again.

He has a ton of contacts too, I think we will be just fine

Yeah, as I detailed on another thread here about the 15 remaining 2023 Boise State softball players (who aren't graduating or entering the TP) Boise State will currently have 22 players for the 2024 team.  That's 15 returning players from the 2022 team plus 6 new freshmen players next fall and the one known transfer.

So with only 22 players they have room to add three, maybe four, more transferring players.   They could add a catcher to replace Serena Huchinson, a shortstop to replace Eliyah Flores and a third base player to replace Autumn Bennett and a DP to replace Kelsey Hall.

This is more about NIL than transfer portal.  There will be a PAC team that will get her $300k.  Pretty easy for a team if they offer her that much.

Meh we don't know her intentions. Maybe it is NIL related or maybe she just had a change of heart and feels that she needs to be somewhere else to finish out her career. She is going to make whatever school she chooses that much better.

The fact that Kelsey has two more years of eligibility - including the extra year - and the fact that she has been extraordinarily successful for TWO years at Boise State should make her an extremely "hot" commodity to any other D-1 softball program.  She will almost certainly have her choice of any number of schools IMO.

Meh.  This isn't so much about Kelsey as it is the NIL in general.  BSU football and to some extent basketball has some sponsors lined up to get high profile players some pretty good money.  I do believe they should be compensated thusly. However, when it comes to women's sports, BSU and nearly all MWC teams don't have sponsors lined up.  In fact, as hard as our NIL staff tries, the sponsors are not there.  But, in the bigger stage, an MWC Player of the Year or other standout player can pull in some dollars because the support for most of the schools in the community is ten times in just numbers.  So sponsors are in line for high profile players in women's sports.  (See Cavender twins going from Fresno to Miami)

Now that the NIL has become a factor, it is more important than ever to showcase BSU's women's programs.  But, Learfield is practically useless in doing so.  Their website is always jacked-up. Half the links don't work.  The player profiles are painfully slow to update.  The fanzone is worthless.  The most recent photos of most of the sports are 2021.  They got guys taking pictures, but Learfield never updates the photos. If Learfield worked for me, I would fire them immediately for non-performance.  The media has long ignored women's sports.  KTVB is just now running some stories about Kelsey or a few others.  BNN has stepped up by hiring a reporter to cover some of the women's sports.  BJ is making an effort to interview coaches and players.  But there is more to do to get players faces to the business community.

So what does this have to do with NIL?  It all adds up in getting image and likeness out to community where some business can see it and come to the plate for players that are in women's sports.   So when somebody says "meh" about a comment regarding NIL money, he/she better start paying attention because it is out there in the bigger schools.

Kelsey is my favorite player.  I have talked to her parents several times (mostly last year) and they are so supportive of her.  I believe her when she says she wants to compete at a higher level and be challenged at that level.  I will continue to cheer for her.  One thing I will say is that BroncoNation fully supported her early in the year when she was struggling.  She may not find that kind of support in PAC or the Big 12.  As far as I am concerned, she is welcome back at any time.
