New Mexico State, by the way, will be joining Conference USA on July 1, 2023.   As I'm sure most know New Mexico has been an Independent since the Sun Belt dropped them (and Idaho) a few years ago.  But unlike Idaho New Mexico State did not drop down to the FCS level.   So that's going to end up being a good choice for Jacob.

Off topic and Mountain West fans may not like it but I'd like to see New Mexico State join the conference. Very strong Basketball squad and natural rivals with New Mexico. No not a strong football team that would move the needle but their basketball success would. They would come in and compete right away.

As I mentioned above they are going to Conference USA as of July 1, 2023.

Secondly New Mexico won't allow New Mexico State to join the MWC.  They are adamantly opposed to that and have been for a long time.  Much like Boise State would be opposed to Idaho joining the MWC.

Conference landscape has changed very quickly before. Us and San Diego State were once Big East bound until we weren't. Texas, Oklahoma and Okie State were Pac 12 bound until they weren't. Nothing is official until it actually happens especially in todays crazy collegiate climate. New Mexico is also just one voice for the Mountain West. If the other MW presidents wanted them in, they could/would make it happen. Also the bad blood between the two schools cant be entirely too toxic since they are still scheduling each other for football and basketball games each year. Sure the argument is that its an easy sell for their state considering there really isn't much of a rivalry elsewhere for them that could sell tickets like this one.

That being said and all. Its just a hypothetical scenario. The Mountain West has been all talk about expansion only to sit on their hands and do nothing. Maybe the new leadership can steer the conference back to relevancy again.

I hope Andy can secure some big-time portal guys this year.  An EDGE, a TE, and a LB that are ready to play would really help this team.  Maybe a couple safeties and lineman (both sides) as well.

Few names to keep an eye for with possible interest from us:

  • Brandon Buckner (Oregon) - EDGE
  • Chase Penry (Colorado) - WR
  • Xavion Alford (USC) -  S
  • Tre Weed (Eastern Washington) - DB

The transfer portal is blowing up, something like 1000 players have entered so far.  Lots of tires to kick, hopefully there are some good players that will play for us.  Many are chasing playing time and NIL money.  Not sure what AA can do about the NIL money.  Coach Prime is like sweet honey, he has players flocking to him, seeking the limelight.  We will get good players, just not the big name prime time players.  Boise is a blue collar town, AA will get our kind of guys.

Go Broncos.

Frankly I think the best move the MWC could make would be to drop Hawai'i and/or also drop one other school (let's say Air Force) and get down to 10 teams.   Hawai'i adds nothing much to the MWC and is a big expense each year to the MWC schools that have to play over there in football.   The TV contracts would not change much at all considering that all Hawaii games aren't on CBSSports or the Fox channels - even their away MWC games are on the channel that Hawaii has (Spectrum?).

Drop one or two schools and the TV revenue remains basically the same but it is divided between one or two less schools.   I suggested Air Force because I have always thought that military academies should never be a part of any NCAA conference.  They operate under completely different rules.   All three of them SHOULD be NCAA Independents IMO.

Figured we could use a thread dedicated for Portal news involving Boise State (will try to update as much as I can and feel free to reply if you see someone that has entered or have found where they are committed to)

Boise State players who have entered the portal for 2022:

  • Tyneil Hooper - TE
  • Will Ferrin - K
  • Deven Wright - EDGE
  • Isaiah Bagnah - EDGE
  • Hank Bachmeier - QB
  • Taequan Tyler - RB
  • Roman Kafentzis - Safety/Nickel
  • Jalen Richmond - WR
  • Casey Kline - Athlete
  • Jacob Golden - OL ----> currently committed to New Mexico State

Few names to keep an eye for with possible interest from us:

  • Brandon Buckner (Oregon) - EDGE
  • Chase Penry (Colorado) - WR
  • Xavion Alford (USC) -  S
  • Tre Weed (Eastern Washington) - DB

Im surprised Bagnah and Hopper both arent getting more Power 5 interest. Bagnah especially. Maybe a little undersized for EDGE rushing ability but it never really hindered him while here. Is a perfect body type for a stand up LB spot though. Am happy they have options though. That is the most important part

Updated with a couple new names on the watch list
