Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen will make his first career start on Saturday night against New Mexico, coach Andy Avalos told a small group of reporters including one from Bronco Nation News on Friday morning.
Taylen Green, who started each of the first nine games and 19 straight games dating back to last season, will be used in a reserve role for the first time.
“Maddux Madsen will start the game and we’ll continue to with TG, he’ll still continue to play,” Avalos said prior to Friday’s practice. “We feel this will even be a greater opportunity to get TG involved in the game and have him present in the game more than he has in the last couple of games.
“We’re really looking forward to building on the production we’ve had as an offense. Our production has really gone up since we’ve been using the two quarterbacks and we intend to keep using both quarterbacks.”
A week ago Green started but was removed after just one play against Fresno State, a handoff to George Holani and Madsen ended up playing nearly 75 percent of the snaps in a 37-30 loss.
Madsen has played more snaps than Green in each of the past four games, and now will take the initial snap for the first time. Madsen is 75 for 121 (62 percent) for 989 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with three interceptions.
Green is 83 for 157 (53 percent) for 1,142 yards and six touchdowns.
Madsen is seen by coaches as the better passing quarterback, while Green has been used mostly in running situations in recent weeks.

Boise State will be playing without star wide receiver Eric McAlister, who left the team earlier in the week after deciding to transfer. That elevates Austin Bolt and Prince Strachan into bigger roles, and creates
“We’re looking forward to seeing some wide receivers step up and take advantage of their opportunities which will be there this week,” Avalos said Friday. “Excited to see that.”
