GREEN BAY – Running back Ashton Jeanty become the highest draft pick in Boise State history on Thursday when the Las Vegas Raiders selected him No. 6 overall in the first round of the NFL Draft at Lambeau Field.
Jeanty danced and celebrated as he took the stage before sharing a long embrace with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Sporting his new Raiders cap and a big smile, Jeanty then held up his new black and silver jersey – living out a childhood dream that only a few get to experience.
“It’s an amazing feeling – one of the best feelings I’ve ever had,” Jeanty told Bronco Nation News a short time after. “True excitement, true joy. I’m excited to be a Raider. I kind of had a feeling this is what it was going to be, so I’m just happy.”
Jeanty surpassed Ryan Clady (No. 12 overall to the Denver Broncos in 2008) as the highest player ever drafted in Boise State history. He’s the second Boise State running back to go in the first round and just the sixth Boise State player ever to be a first round pick.
“It means everything,” Jeanty said. “It was always my goal once I stepped foot on campus, to leave a legacy and leave an impact like no other and I think I did that.”
Jeanty planned to celebrate with his family Thursday night before flying Friday morning to Las Vegas where he will be introduced by the Raiders at an afternoon press conference.
Bronco Nation News was on the scene in Green Bay and had plenty of coverage of Thursday’s historic night. Watch interviews with Jeanty, Boise State coach Spencer Danielson and athletic director Jeramiah Dickey below.
