GREEN BAY – Former Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty always dreamed of this day.
It still doesn’t make it seem any less surreal.
The record-setting running back will hear his name called Thursday night at Lambeau Field and he’ll walk across the stage as a likely top-10 pick in the NFL Draft.
“I did imagine it, but I didn’t know if it would have been quite like this,” Jeanty told Bronco Nation News on Wednesday. “It’s just amazing to be where I’m at.”
Mock drafts have Jeanty now going as high as No. 5 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He could go No. 6 to the Raiders as well. One thing seems certain though – he’s poised to make more history Boise State history. If he’s pick No. 11 or higher – which seems like a lock at this point – he’ll become the highest player ever drafted out of Boise State.
Jeanty took time to work a skills clinic for athletes with the Special Olympics on Wednesday morning alongside the other prospects attending the draft. He chatted with BNN afterwords about a crazy journey that has him here, in Green Bay, and about to etch his name into the history books.
“A lot of gratefulness,” Jeanty said. “There’s so many emotions right now. Just to look back and think when I was a little kid dreaming of this moment and how the younger me would be so proud of me to be here today.
“I think it will really hit me once we’re there tomorrow in the Green Room and once my name is called and I’m on the stage.”
Jeanty will become the sixth Boise State player to be drafted in the first round and the first since linebacker Leighton Vander Esch went No. 19 to the Dallas Cowboys in 2019.
He’ll be just the second Boise State running back to be taken in the first round, joining Doug Martin – who went No. 31 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.
“I’m forever grateful to Boise State and that community,” Jeanty said.
As for where Jeanty might land? He’s not sure – but he’s ready to find out.
“I’m just ready to see where I’m going,” Jeanty said. “It’s been a long process but I’m glad the moment is almost here.”
Bronco Nation News is the only local media outlet from Boise to make the trip to cover Jeanty at the NFL Draft in Green Bay. Here’s some of our coverage from Wednesday…
