Bronco Nation News is taking a look at 25 questions about the Boise State football team heading into the 2024 season. Next up in our series is No. 18: How big of an impact will transfers Chris Marshall and Cam Camper make at wide receiver?
Boise State coach Spencer Danielson took a chance on a pair of intriguing transfers at wide receiver – and both have the potential to be stars.
But Indiana transfer Cam Camper is coming off a pair of injuries the past two seasons and former SEC receiver Chris Marshall is at his fourth school in three years due to off-the-field issues. So what are realistic expectations for the two? It’s a key question facing the Boise State wide receiver group heading into 2024.
Camper arrives after two years at Indiana, where he had 63 catches for 854 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games. In 2022, Camper had 46 catches for 569 yards and two touchdowns in seven games before suffering an ACL injury midway through the season.
He returned in 2023 but had just 17 catches for 285 yards and a touchdown while being limited to eight games due to an injury to the same knee.
Camper missed spring practice while continuing to rehab his knee injury, which only added to the intrigue of his potential impact. He’s got Big Ten size – he’s listed at 6-2, 195 pounds – and was productive at Indiana in limited action. But the history of injuries makes it tough to project his impact with the Broncos.
The same goes for Marshall, who was once a 5-star recruit and one of the top 25 players in the 2022 recruiting class when he signed with Texas A&M. But he eventually left due to off-field issues and spent a spring at Ole Miss before landing at Kilgore Junior College.
Marshall was named the No. 1 JUCO prospect by 247Sports in the 2024 class before signing with Boise State.
He missed most of the spring due to a hamstring injury but was impressive in the limited action open to media members. He has the talent to be a star in the Mountain West – if he can stay out of trouble and on the field.
Boise State returns Latrell Caples, who led the team in receiving in 2022 before missing last season with an achilles injury. Prince Strachan and Austin Bolt also should be primed for big seasons, and Chase Penry was productive prior to a season-ending injury as well.
The Broncos have a crowded wide receiver room with plenty of intriguing options. None may be bigger high-upside gambles than Camper and Marshall, who have proven to be Power-4 capable when not dealing with injuries or disciplinary issues.
Can Camper stay healthy and Marshall stay out of trouble? If so, the two could make major impacts for the Boise State offense this fall. Danielson took a gamble – but one that could pay off in a big way.
