Boise State starting EDGE rusher George Tarlas will likely miss the rest of the season due to a hip injury, sources told Bronco Nation News on Thursday.
Tarlas, a sixth-year senior and transfer from Weber State, has no eligibility remaining – meaning his college career is probably over. Tarlas had surgery earlier this week on his hip, and sources said the injury likely wouldn’t be healed in time for him to return this season.
The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Tarlas had seven tackles against Air Force and met with the media postgame. He said nothing about an injury and didn’t appear to have anything wrong. Injured players typically aren’t made available to the media after a game, either.
Sources told Bronco Nation News that Tarlas indeed suffered the injury against Air Force, but the diagnosis wasn’t discovered until afterwards.
It’s a tough blow to a Boise State defense that ranks among the best in the country through seven games.
Tarlas is tied for fourth on the team with 31 tackles. He leads the Broncos with 6.0 tackles-for-loss and is second on the team with four sacks. He is first with six quarterback hurries and also has a forced fumble.
Tarlas, a native of Greece, attended both Caldwell and Borah high schools in the Boise area. He graduated from Borah in 2017 and signed with Weber State, where he played in 45 games in four seasons and had 120 tackles, 24.5 tackles-for-loss, 19 sacks and two interceptions while earning All-Big Sky honors three different times.
He elected to transfer for his final season, and said he was living out a dream by returning to play for Boise State. It had the makings of a Disney movie, especially given how well he was playing to this point, but instead will have a seemingly unfair ending.
Tarlas has dreams of playing in the NFL, so this might not be the end of his football career. He just won’t suit up again for the Broncos.
