Boise State backup quarterback Jack Sears has entered the transfer portal, sources told Bronco Nation News on Wednesday.
Sears transferred from USC prior to the 2020 season but lost out to Hank Bachmeier for the starting quarterback job in each of the past two years.
Sources told Bronco Nation News that Sears has already cleaned out his locker at Boise State and won’t be playing in the bowl game.
With Bachmeier slated to return and freshman Taylen Green emerging, it’s not all that surprising that Sears would elect to go elsewhere. He saw action in just four games this season in a reserve role and completed 2 of 6 passes for 48 yards.
In 2020 Sears completed 23 of 27 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He started the Air Force game when Bachmeier was out due to COVID-19, and completed 17 of 20 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns.
Sears has one year of eligibility remaining.
Boise State (7-5) will find out a bowl destination on Sunday. Green can play and still preserve a redshirt since it would only be his fourth game of the season.

It’s strange that he won’t be participating in the Bowl Game since it would not affect his eligibility. I know we usually say, “Bronco for Life” but bailing on a Bowl Game does not endear him to me very much. Nevertheless, best of luck to him.
I’m a little surprised he didn’t do this sooner tbh.
It’s a shame that we didn’t get to see what a Sears-led Bronco team looked like. However, it really speaks to the confidence the coaching staff has in Hank, despite his infuriating once-a-game, Favre-like hero passes.
