Boise State’s quarterback battle come fall camp has shrunk from a three-man race to two.
Freshman CJ Tiller, who made his debut in the LA Bowl against UCLA, announced Friday that he will enter the transfer portal.
The news is not that surprising given Tiller, who still has four years of eligibility remaining, appeared to be in third place behind Maddux Madsen and newcomer Malachi Nelson in the quarterback race following spring camp.
Tiller, a former three-star recruit, made his college debut in the LA Bowl and went 12 of 21 for 117 yards and threw an interception in a 35-22 loss to UCLA.
He was just 3 of 9 for 17 yards and threw an interception in Boise State’s spring game last week.
Nelson made big improvements during the spring since arriving as a transfer from USC, while Madsen has game experience under his belt but didn’t participate in live scrimmages and 11-on-11 periods due to rehab from a knee injury. They were expected to be the two main contenders for the starting quarterback job come fall camp anyway, but now are the only two in the mix with Tiller moving on.
