BOISE – Three games is a big enough sample size to know what you’ve got with a team or a side of the ball.
And Boise State’s offense is pretty darn good.
The Broncos had another strong offensive showing, putting up 609 yards and eight touchdowns in a 56-14 blowout win of Portland State inside Albertsons Stadium on Saturday night.
Through three games the Broncos rank No. 7 nationally in scoring offense at 48.7 points and No. 6 in total offense at 543 yards per game.
“I think our offense has done a great job,” said quarterback Maddux Madsen, who was 13 of 18 for 188 yards and three touchdowns. “There’s definitely room (for improvement). We’ll come in here tomorrow and Monday and find certain things we can fix, no doubt, but I’m proud of these guys.
“We’ve seen how well we can play when we play our best. That’s something those guys can look at and we know how well we can be, so let’s not hold ourselves back from that.”
Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty had 127 yards on 11 carries in the first half, but was shut down at halftime due to the Broncos holding a big lead.
Tight end Matt Lauter had his best game at Boise State, hauling in seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.
Cam Camper had two catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
True freshman Dylan Riley had six carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns in his first career game, while true freshman Cameron Bates scored his first career touchdown on a 20-yard end-around in the first quarter.
Tyler Crowe had 11 carries for 57 yards and scored his first touchdown since 2021.
An announced crowd of 36,972 – the fourth largest ever at Albertsons Stadium and the most ever for a home opener – arrived early and had plenty to cheer about from start to finish.
For as good as the offense was, the defense wasn’t bad either. Boise State held Portland State to 277 yards on 58 plays. The Vikings had just 147 rushing yards and 130 passing yards and scored just 14 points.
The Broncos also blocked two field goal attempts Saturday to mark the 26th consecutive season in which Boise State blocked at least one kick.
But there won’t be much time to celebrate this one. Boise State (2-1) hosts Washington State (4-0) on Saturday at 8 p.m. inside Albertsons Stadium.
“We know they are going to come in here ready to roll,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “And we have to be ready too. We have our work cut out for us. They are an explosive offense, they are good on defense, they are really good on special teams. All three phases have to show up. We have to to play our best football. We need Bronco Nation to be here and be loud. It’s going to take everything to win this game next weekend.”
