The Boise State football team will get a final chance to impress the College Football Playoff committee ahead of next week’s debut rankings when the Broncos host San Diego State on Friday at 6 p.m. at Albertsons Stadium.
The Broncos are likely to be included in the 12-team field in the first of several weekly rankings next Tuesday, but Boise State would love to be higher than the No. 12 seed. A strong performance and blowout win against the Aztecs could help with that.
Boise State (6-1, 3-0 MW) topped UNLV 29-24 last Friday in Las Vegas , while San Diego State (3-4, 2-0 MW) is coming off a close 29-26 loss to Washington State last Saturday night.
“We got a big time test coming here on The Blue Friday night,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said. “They’re undefeated in Mountain West Conference play, so are we. It’s going to be a big matchup and (in 2018) the Aztecs were on The Blue and they beat the Broncos on The Blue. I was a part of that and we can’t let that happen and they’re going to have every right to come in here and beat us and we got to earn the right to protect the blue on Friday night.”
Keep an eye on Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. The star tailback had a then-career high 205 yards and two touchdowns last season against San Diego State at Snapdragon Stadium and is likely eager to rebound from his lowest yardage game of the season against UNLV. He appeared to injure his left arm against the Rebels but returned to the game. His health is a major storyline heading into Friday night’s game.
The Aztecs also have a strong running back in Marquez Cooper, who is No. 2 in the Mountain West behind Jeanty with 106.8 rushing yards per game.
