North Carolina, Texas and San Diego State were among those selected to the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday. Boise State was not.
The Broncos were the ‘fourth team out’ according to the committee behind West Virginia, Indiana and Ohio State.
Boise State will now likely play in the newly formed Crown Tournament in Las Vegas March 31 to April 6. They also would be in line to host games in the NIT should they choose that option instead.
Boise State had hoped to land an at-large bid after beating both San Diego State and New Mexico to reach the Mountain West title game. The Broncos could have landed an automatic spot had they beaten Colorado State on Saturday in the championship, but the Rams instead secured the spot with a 69-56 win. Colorado State is a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tourmament.
Four Mountain West teams made the field including Colorado State, San Diego State, New Mexico and Utah State.
Boise State (24-10) has won 11 of 14 games since January 22 and would seemed prime to make a run in whichever postseason tournament it participates in.
The Crown is an intriguing new tournament in Las Vegas in which players receive NIL money for participating. It’s scheduled during open time between the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and Final Four and will likely be a popular postseason tournament moving forward.
The NIT is announced on Sunday evening while the Crown bracket comes out on Monday.
