The Boise State football team has added longtime coaches Dirk Koetter and Ron Collins to the staff as senior analysts, a Boise State official confirmed on Wednesday.
Koetter, the head coach at Boise State from 1998-2000, will work with the offense while Collins, who spent four seasons as defensive coordinator of the Broncos from 2002-05 and was coach Andy Avalos’ linebackers coach, will work with the defense.
Analysts are not allowed to recruit or coach on the field. They primarily help behind the scenes with game-planning and breaking down practice and game footage of both their team and the opponents. It’s an important position that most Power 5 programs have as it adds an extra opinion to the mix while helping take some work off the plate of the on-field coaches.
Koetter recently retired from coaching after 35 years as a college and NFL coach. He was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2016-2018 and also served as offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He left Boise State in 2000 to become the head coach at Arizona State before moving to the NFL ranks.
Collins was one of four assistants to leave Boise State and follow coach Dan Hawkins to Colorado in 2005. He previously announced his retirement from coaching after nine seasons on the staff at Ohio.
Koetter’s son Davis is a wide receiver on the Broncos and expected to be a starter this fall.
Home run hires. Nice to see Koetter back.
