Boise State athletic director Jeramiah Dickey appeared to make official some fairly significant football scheduling news on social media Tuesday: the BYU series will end when the Cougars join the Big 12 in 2023.
Responding to a question on Twtitter about the BYU series, Dickey posted, “One more game with them and then done…for now. They have been awesome to work with. Challenging for them as an independent. Utah and Utah State also important to their base. I have hope we can get a (home and home) in the future but they need to figure out Big 12, etc and I completely understand.”

Boise State and BYU had two years remaining on an original 12-year deal that was set to expire after the 2023 season, and a new 10-year was set to start in 2025. But with BYU going from independent to a nine-game Big 12 Conference schedule in 2023, most of the Cougars’ future scheduling agreements will be forced to end.
There was some hope BYU would keep Boise State as one of its three yearly nonconference games once the Cougars joined the Big 12, but it now appears the 2022 game in Boise on Nov. 5 will be final scheduled meeting for now.
A Boise State spokesman couldn’t confirm the news.
The Broncos and Cougars first played in 2003 and 2004 and have since played every season since 2012. Boise State is 8-4 all-time against BYU, including a 26-17 upset over then-No. 10 BYU last season in Provo.
Unfortunately JD will probably fill in those lost games with low rung FCS schools. Hope not, but the guaranteed wins seem more important.
