Texas Tech transfer and former four-star prospect Chibuzo Agbo committed to the Boise State men’s basketball team on Wednesday night.
He sat down with Bronco Nation News on Friday afternoon to discuss his commitment. This video is available only for subscribers, so thanks for being a subscriber to Bronco Nation News:
Here’s our previous story on Agbo’s commitment to the Broncos…
Agbo posted a graphic to his Twitter account on Wednesday evening that said, “Boise! Let’s do it.”
The 6-foot-7 wing is a nice addition for the Broncos, who have to replace both Abu Kigab and Emmanuel Akot from last year’s Mountain West Championship team. He’s seen as an athletic wing that can get to the basket or shoot from the outside, and he’s regarded as a strong rebounder.
Agbo averaged 1.5 points in 6.7 minutes per game last season at Texas Tech, but made 41.7 percent of his shots. He was the No. 75 ranked recruit in the 2020 class from 247Sports out of high school, when he averaged 22 points per game as a senior at Saint Augustine High in San Diego. He picked Texas Tech over offers from USC, San Diego State, Arizona, Marquette and Butler among others.
He comes in with similar situations as both Kigab and Akot – a high-level player who didn’t get a chance to reach his potential at a Power 5 school. Agbo has three years of eligibility remaining and is immediately eligible to play for the Broncos this fall.
Agbo, who visited Boise State last weekend, had a season-high eight points in Texas Tech’s first round NCAA Tournament win over Montana State in March in his home town of San Diego. He went 3 for 3 from the field and hit two 3-pointers in six minutes of action.,
“So excited that a hometown player got in the game and played so well, but that’s not surprising at all to our team,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said of Agbo after that game, according to the Daily Toreador. “He’s made shots all year for us, one of our best three-point shooters … he’s such an unbelievably nice young man and he’s a gym rat. It’s nice to see him get a chance to play and play so well.”
Agbo picked Boise State over a pair of Mountain West schools in Nevada and New Mexico.
Boise State announced the signing of Agbo a short time later Wednesday night, but coach Leon Rice was not immediately available for comment. A text message to Agbo seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned.
The Broncos are still waiting on decisions from starters Marcus Shaver Jr. and Mladen Armus. Shaver Jr. is testing the NBA Draft waters but is expected to return, while Armus is weighing whether to return for his extra COVID year of eligibility or pursue a professional career.
Boise State won a program-record 27 games last season (27-8) and won both the Mountain West regular season and tournament championships. The Broncos were a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their highest-seed in program history.
